Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

What we cover in Lindfield, and how quickly we can get there.
Lindfield sits about 10.7 km north of the CBD in the Upper North Shore, and postcode 2070 is one we are in most weeks. We run Lindfield on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Sir Phillip Game Reserve, Lindfield Shopping Village or Roseville Golf Course, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Lindfield for us.
Under Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby, we cover Lindfield and Killara, East Lindfield and Roseville alike. Bush edges keep re-supplying the problem, which is why we treat the boundary rather than only the interior.
Lindfield jobs tend to be homes on sloping blocks with a sub-floor and bush on the boundary. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Beyond that we are regularly around Lindfield station, and out as far as Millwood Park. If you are anywhere in 2070, you are inside the area we run.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Killara and East Lindfield are covered on the same round, 2070 often has an earlier slot available.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Lindfield kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
People assume a trail means something was left out. Around Lindfield it is just as likely to be the bathroom, because water is the scarcer resource in summer.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Fine soil pushed up along paving joints, path edges and garden edging is excavation - there is a nest directly beneath. Around Lindfield that is coastal brown ants more often than not.
We are around Sir Phillip Game Reserve most weeks and cover every street in 2070, including the ones off the main roads.
The Upper North Shore pattern is a surge after the first warm fortnight, then steady pressure into March. A colony treated in September is a fraction of the job it is in January.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. The fixed price depends on the size of the property and how far the problem has spread, and we confirm it before we start - there is no call-out fee in Lindfield 2070. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Lindfield sits roughly 10.7 km north of the CBD, inside our Upper North Shore run, so we book a time and keep to it.
The reserve next door is a permanent population you cannot treat. All that is in question is how easily ants cross from it into the building, which is a perimeter problem.
Free-standing homes with gardens running into bush. We treat the boundary as seriously as the building.
We do. A lot of our Lindfield work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes, applied correctly. Products are registered for this use, placed out of reach rather than across open surfaces, and you will know what to stay off and for how long.
Usually not. Most ant control work is done with you there, and anything that needs the room vacated is for a short period we will tell you about beforehand.
An hour to two hours covers most jobs. The size of the building and the extent of the problem are what change it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
We cover the whole of Lindfield, from the streets around Sir Phillip Game Reserve out to the suburb boundary and on into Killara.
