Budding splits the colony
Where a species has many queens, a repellent spray causes budding rather than death. Part of the colony, queen included, moves elsewhere, and you have doubled the problem.

Where Little Bay sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our Eastern Suburbs technicians cover Little Bay and the rest of 2036 as a matter of course - it is only about 12.8 km south of the city. We run Little Bay on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Macartney Reserve, Chifley Sports Reserve or Cape Banks Aquatic Reserve, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Little Bay for us.
Little Bay is in the Waverley, Randwick and Woollahra area, and we cover Phillip Bay, Chifley and La Perouse on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Being this close to the coast, sub-floors and ground-floor bathrooms stay damp most of the year, which is the condition that keeps activity going.
What we see in Little Bay is apartments where the problem is really in the building rather than the flat. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
The whole of 2036 is covered, Cruwee Cove included.
When you book, we confirm the 2036 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Phillip Bay or Chifley that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Little Bay kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
Several of the species we treat around Little Bay are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Little Bay. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Ants in the cavity of a Little Bay house will appear at power points, architraves and ceiling roses - anywhere the cavity opens into the room.
If your Little Bay paving keeps developing little sand volcanoes, sweeping them away is treating the spoil rather than the nest. The colony is in the bedding sand under the slab.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in Little Bay. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 12.8 km south of the city here, and Little Bay is covered by the Eastern Suburbs team.
Coastal suburbs hold moisture. Sandy soil drains but the air does not dry out, so the conditions under a Little Bay house suit ants nearly all year.
Walk-up blocks and free-standing houses, with moisture the common factor. The sub-floor gets as much attention as the kitchen.
We do. A lot of our Little Bay work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes, when it is applied properly. We use registered products at label rates and tell you which areas to keep clear and for how long. Mention pets, fish tanks or allergies when you book.
Normally you can stay. Some treatments mean keeping out of a particular room briefly, and we will flag that when we arrive so you can plan around it.
For a standard Little Bay home, one to two hours. We would rather tell you it will take longer up front than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. If it is not holding, call us - that is exactly what the warranty is for.
All of them. Little Bay sits alongside Phillip Bay, Chifley, La Perouse and Malabar in our coverage, and they are serviced on the same schedule.
