Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

What we cover in Marsfield, and how quickly we can get there.
Marsfield is part of the Ryde & the Northern District, 13.9 km or so north-west of the GPO, and 2122 is a postcode we know well. We run Marsfield on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
A lot of our Marsfield jobs are in the streets around Coxs Road Mall and Macquarie University station, and we are out near Epping station regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
We cover North Epping, Denistone East and North Ryde on the same runs as Marsfield, which helps when ant problems are moving between neighbouring properties. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
Marsfield jobs tend to be apartments and converted blocks where the kitchen backs onto a service riser. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
The rest of 2122 is covered too, including the pockets around Lynelle Park and Pioneer Park.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2122 run the day before, and if North Epping or Denistone East is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Marsfield. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
A test with small amounts of each bait type - sweet, protein, oil-based - tells us what the colony wants at this point in its cycle.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in Marsfield after a storm is almost always this.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
A branch touching the roof is a bridge. Mulch banked against brickwork is harbourage. Most of what brings ants inside a Marsfield home is in the garden immediately around it.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products only - they are taken back to the nest rather than scattering it.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in Marsfield. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Our Ryde & the Northern District technicians cover Marsfield daily, and you get a confirmed arrival time when you book.
Older inner suburbs combine shared structure with ageing drainage, and ants exploit both. Rear courtyards that have been paved over make it worse by trapping damp against the walls.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.
