Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

What we cover in North Parramatta, and how quickly we can get there.
If you are in North Parramatta or anywhere else in 2151, you are in our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland patch, 20.4 km west of the CBD. We run North Parramatta on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
The North Parramatta addresses we attend cluster around Oatlands Golf Course and Benaud Oval station. Maria Lock Park is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
Under City of Parramatta and Cumberland, we cover North Parramatta and Parramatta, Northmead and Westmead alike. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
Around North Parramatta the pattern is fairly consistent: terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
Our North Parramatta runs also take in Stewart Street Reserve and the area near Mayfair Plaza, so the whole postcode is served.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Parramatta and Northmead are covered on the same round, 2151 often has an earlier slot available.
Some species excavate soft, damp timber rather than eat it. Finding them in a North Parramatta window frame or bathroom wall usually means moisture has been getting into that timber for a while.
If trails appear in winter, or in a first-floor bathroom with no outdoor route, the nest is probably inside the building.
Several of the species we treat around North Parramatta are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in the lawn and garden beds. The sting is genuinely painful and in some people causes a serious allergic reaction.

Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.
Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Granular bait or direct treatment for coastal brown ant nests under pavers and in lawn edges.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugars, with protein at times | Slow-acting baits plus non-repellent treatment across the property line | Repellent barrier sprays, which split multi-queen nests |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Nocturnal, on sweet foods and insects | Trails inspected at night, bait placed near the nest, timber moisture fixed | Only ever treating during the day, when there is nothing to see |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
A branch touching the roof is a bridge. Mulch banked against brickwork is harbourage. Most of what brings ants inside a North Parramatta home is in the garden immediately around it.
A storm is the most reliable trigger for an indoor ant problem. Nests in soil and paving flood, and the colony relocates somewhere dry, meaning your building.
The Greater Parramatta & Cumberland pattern is a surge after the first warm fortnight, then steady pressure into March. A colony treated in September is a fraction of the job it is in January.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

Terraces and semis share walls, roof voids and sub-floors, so ants move between houses without ever going outside. That is the single biggest factor here.
