Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

Where Westmead sits, who covers it and what it costs.
We treat ants right across 2145. Westmead is roughly 21.6 km west of the city, which puts it well inside the Greater Parramatta & Cumberland run our technicians work. We run Westmead on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
The Westmead addresses we attend cluster around Maple Tree Road Reserve and Parramatta Aquatic Centre. Otto Losco Reserve is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
This is the City of Parramatta and Cumberland area, and our runs here also take in Parramatta, North Parramatta and Constitution Hill. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
The bulk of our Westmead work is terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
The rest of 2145 is covered too, including the pockets around Westfield Parramatta and Westmead station.
When you book, we confirm the 2145 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Parramatta or North Parramatta that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Where we find ants in a Westmead wall or frame, we look for the water first. Fix the leak and the timber dries; leave it and another colony will use the same cavity.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Westmead garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Nocturnal, on sweet foods and insects | Trails inspected at night, bait placed near the nest, timber moisture fixed | Only ever treating during the day, when there is nothing to see |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging at its height, and mating flights whenever it turns warm and humid | Winged ants indoors, and much heavier trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
For a Westmead cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
Honeydew is a sugar supply the colony will defend. We point out the plant on a Westmead job because otherwise the trail simply re-establishes.
The garden is usually the source. Shrubs touching the walls, mulch up against the footings and irrigated beds give a colony everything it needs within a metre of your kitchen.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.

Same-day attendance is usually available. Westmead sits roughly 21.6 km west of the CBD, inside our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Older inner suburbs combine shared structure with ageing drainage, and ants exploit both. Rear courtyards that have been paved over make it worse by trapping damp against the walls.
Terraces and semis, often with a paved rear courtyard that traps damp against the wall - both of which shape the job.
Yes - freestanding homes, townhouses, apartments, rentals and business premises in Westmead 2145 are all covered, with documentation suitable for an agent or a strata manager.

In the great majority of jobs, no. If one area needs to be left for an hour or two we say so before we start rather than after.
An hour to two hours covers most jobs. The size of the building and the extent of the problem are what change it.
