Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

Where Oakhurst sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Postcode 2761 covers Oakhurst and the streets immediately around it. At about 37.4 km north-west of the CBD it falls in the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, where we have vans out daily. We cover Oakhurst on scheduled runs through the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
Around Oakhurst we work the pockets near Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club, Plumpton Marketplace and Plumpton Marketplace most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
Blacktown City is the council area for Oakhurst, and we treat Hassall Grove, Hebersham and Bidwill on the same schedule. On a newer estate the houses are near-identical and tightly spaced, which means a problem in one tends to turn up in the ones either side.
The ant calls we take from Oakhurst are mostly newer homes on small blocks where next door has the same problem. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
Our Oakhurst runs also take in Plumpton Park and the area near Charlotte Carne Park, so the whole postcode is served.
The 2761 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Hassall Grove and Hebersham fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
After heavy rain the opposite happens - flooded nests push colonies up and inside. Both extremes send ants into Oakhurst houses for different reasons.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
Some species excavate soft, damp timber rather than eat it. Finding them in a Oakhurst window frame or bathroom wall usually means moisture has been getting into that timber for a while.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Those spring and summer swarms of winged ants are mating flights. If they are coming out inside the house, there may be a mature colony in the building.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.
Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar, always outside | The nest itself is treated directly, in lawn or garden bed | Hand-digging a nest, which reliably ends in stings |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging at its height, and mating flights whenever it turns warm and humid | Winged ants indoors, and much heavier trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
A column of ants going in and out of a weep hole means they are nesting in the cavity, not the garden. Treating the garden bed in that case does nothing at all for a Oakhurst home.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Honeydew is a sugar supply the colony will defend. We point out the plant on a Oakhurst job because otherwise the trail simply re-establishes.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products only - they are taken back to the nest rather than scattering it.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Oakhurst and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
At roughly 37.4 km north-west of the city, Oakhurst is on a route we run regularly. We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. You will be given a time, not a window.
The ground here was cleared and rebuilt recently, which displaced whatever lived in it, and the blocks are close enough that ants move between them along the fence lines.
Newer homes, tightly spaced, usually slab on ground - so the treatment concentrates on the perimeter and entry points.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Oakhurst 2761, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
It is, applied properly. We put product into cracks, voids and stations rather than across open surfaces, and we will tell you what to stay off and for how long before we leave.
Most of the time you can carry on as normal. If a particular area needs to be empty we will flag it when we arrive and it is rarely more than a couple of hours.
Between one and two hours covers the majority of jobs. We do not book so tightly that a technician has to cut a job short.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
