Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

We treat ants right across 2138. Rhodes is roughly 12.3 km west of the city, which puts it well inside the Inner West run our technicians work. We run Rhodes on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Our Rhodes work takes in the streets by Uhrs Point Reserve and Rhodes Waterside Shopping Centre, through to Ryde Parramatta Golf Club at the other end.
Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay is the council area for Rhodes, and we treat Wentworth Point, Liberty Grove and Concord West on the same schedule. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
The bulk of our Rhodes work is older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Rhodes station and Phoenix Park are on the same round, which means every part of 2138 is within our area.
The 2138 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Wentworth Point and Liberty Grove fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
Ants will defend aphids and scale from predators because that honeydew is their sugar supply. Deal with the scale on the plants near the house and the ant pressure drops with it.
Coastal brown ants, black house ants and odorous house ants all behave differently and all turn up around Rhodes. We identify before we bait rather than putting down a general-purpose product and hoping.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Very small brown ants, with soldiers that have noticeably bigger heads. You spot them by the fine sandy soil pushed up through paving joints, slab edges and grout. The colonies are big and multi-nested, so oil-based granular bait is the tool.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in the lawn and garden beds. The sting is genuinely painful and in some people causes a serious allergic reaction.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Outdoor feeders on insects and nectar | Direct treatment of the nest in the lawn or garden bed | Opening the nest up by hand and being stung for it |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Brick cavities are dry, warm and undisturbed, which makes them ideal nesting. The weep hole is the doorway and it is usually where we start on a Rhodes job.
For a Rhodes cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
After sustained rain in Rhodes we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Rhodes and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
At roughly 12.3 km west of the city, Rhodes is on a route we run regularly. Same-day attendance is usually available. You will be given a time, not a window.
Joined housing is the reason. Where walls, roof voids and sub-floors are continuous between properties, ants are a street-level problem rather than a house-level one.
Joined older housing, often with a paved rear courtyard holding damp against the wall. Both things shape the treatment.
Yes - freestanding homes, townhouses, apartments, rentals and business premises in Rhodes 2138 are all covered, with documentation suitable for an agent or a strata manager.
Yes, applied correctly. Products are registered for this use, placed out of reach rather than across open surfaces, and you will know what to stay off and for how long.
Usually not. Most of the work is done with you in the house, and where a room does need to be clear it is for a short period we will tell you about on arrival.
Allow one to two hours for a typical Rhodes property. Larger homes, or ones where the problem has spread, take longer and we will say so when we quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. If activity continues past the expected period, call us and we will come back.
All of them. Rhodes sits alongside Wentworth Point, Liberty Grove, Concord West and Mortlake in our coverage, and they are serviced on the same schedule.
