Richmond is part of the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West, 51.9 km or so north-west of the GPO, and 2753 is a postcode we know well. We travel out to Richmond on planned runs through the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
The Richmond addresses we attend cluster around East Richmond station and Richmond Park. Richmond Golf Club is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
Richmond is in the Hawkesbury area, and we cover Hobartville, Agnes Banks and Clarendon on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. On larger blocks the outbuildings, sheds and woodpiles are usually where the problem is sitting, so they are part of the inspection.
The bulk of our Richmond work is rural-residential homes where it started in a stable or a feed store. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Our Richmond runs also take in Richmond Marketplace and the area near Richmond station, so the whole postcode is served.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Hobartville and Agnes Banks are covered on the same round, 2753 often has an earlier slot available.
If trails appear in winter, or in a first-floor bathroom with no outdoor route, the nest is probably inside the building.
Ant control is colony control. Everything else - sprays, powders, wiping the bench - is managing symptoms, and around Richmond that is why the same trail comes back every spring.
A colony can occupy a garden bed, a paving slab and a wall cavity at once. That is why a single treated nest in Richmond changes very little on its own.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Very small brown ants, with soldiers that have noticeably bigger heads. You spot them by the fine sandy soil pushed up through paving joints, slab edges and grout. The colonies are big and multi-nested, so oil-based granular bait is the tool.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Ants in the cavity of a Richmond house will appear at power points, architraves and ceiling roses - anywhere the cavity opens into the room.
For a Richmond cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
Ants protecting aphids on a Richmond citrus or gardenia will keep that trail running all season. It is a garden problem presenting as a kitchen one.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products only - they are taken back to the nest rather than scattering it.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.

On larger blocks the house is usually not where it starts. Sheds, woodpiles, feed stores and outbuildings give ants somewhere established to live before they ever reach the house.
Bigger properties with sheds and open ground, where the source is usually outside the house.
