Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Our Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West technicians cover Clarendon and the rest of 2756 as a matter of course - it is only about 48.4 km north-west of the city. We travel out to Clarendon on planned runs through the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Around Clarendon we work the pockets near Kingdom Estate Hawkesbury River Golf Club, Bligh Park Shopping Centre and Clarendon station most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
Hawkesbury is the council area for Clarendon, and we treat South Windsor, Windsor and Bligh Park on the same schedule. On larger blocks the outbuildings, sheds and woodpiles are usually where the problem is sitting, so they are part of the inspection.
Most Clarendon bookings come in as larger blocks where the shed or the woodpile turns out to be the source. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
We cover the remainder of 2756 as well, from Windsor station through to Windsor Golf Course.
Bookings for 2756 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at South Windsor and Windsor often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Clarendon kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
Ants will defend aphids and scale from predators because that honeydew is their sugar supply. Deal with the scale on the plants near the house and the ant pressure drops with it.
Ants in timber are a symptom. They do not create the damp, they move into timber the damp has already softened, so the leak matters more than the ants.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Fast-moving, small and dull brown, in thick trails. Its nests are multi-queen and interconnected with neighbouring nests, so it spreads across properties - and repellent sprays accelerate exactly that.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in the lawn and garden beds. The sting is genuinely painful and in some people causes a serious allergic reaction.

The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar, always outside | The nest itself is treated directly, in lawn or garden bed | Hand-digging a nest, which reliably ends in stings |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging at its height, and mating flights whenever it turns warm and humid | Winged ants indoors, and much heavier trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Little happening outdoors, but a nest in a heated wall stays active | Activity around heaters, the hot water unit and kitchen areas |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
A column of ants going in and out of a weep hole means they are nesting in the cavity, not the garden. Treating the garden bed in that case does nothing at all for a Clarendon home.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Mulch against the wall, a shrub touching the eaves and a damp garden bed along the footings all put ants within reach of the building. In Clarendon we routinely find the colony is in the garden, not the house.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
Baits are matched to the species and the season rather than used as a default.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Clarendon and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. We are about 48.4 km north-west of the city here, and Clarendon is covered by the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West team.
On larger blocks the house is usually not where it starts. Sheds, woodpiles, feed stores and outbuildings give ants somewhere established to live before they ever reach the house.
Rural-residential stock - house plus outbuildings - and both get looked at.
Yes. Houses, townhouses, units, strata common property, rentals and commercial sites in Clarendon 2756 are all part of what we do, and the paperwork is the kind agents accept.
It is, provided the instructions are followed. We will tell you what to keep clear of and for how long before we leave. Let us know about children, pets or fish tanks when you book.
Normally you can stay. Some treatments mean keeping out of a particular room briefly, and we will flag that when we arrive so you can plan around it.
Allow an hour to two hours for most properties. A bigger building, or one where the problem has spread, takes longer - and we would rather tell you that when quoting than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. That is the point of the warranty - you do not pay twice for the same problem.
