Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

What we cover in South Windsor, and how quickly we can get there.
Postcode 2756 covers South Windsor and the streets immediately around it. At about 46.2 km north-west of the CBD it falls in the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West, where we have vans out daily. We travel out to South Windsor on planned runs through the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Our South Windsor work takes in the streets by Clarendon station and Bereewan Park, through to Windsor Downs Nature Reserve at the other end.
South Windsor is in the Hawkesbury area, and we cover Bligh Park, Windsor and Clarendon on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Bigger properties mean sheds, stables and stacked timber to check as well as the house.
South Windsor jobs tend to be larger blocks where the shed or the woodpile turns out to be the source. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Beyond that we are regularly around Windsor Golf Course, and out as far as Bligh Park Shopping Centre. If you are anywhere in 2756, you are inside the area we run.
The 2756 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Bligh Park and Windsor fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
A colony can occupy a garden bed, a paving slab and a wall cavity at once. That is why a single treated nest in South Windsor changes very little on its own.
After heavy rain the opposite happens - flooded nests push colonies up and inside. Both extremes send ants into South Windsor houses for different reasons.
If trails appear in winter, or in a first-floor bathroom with no outdoor route, the nest is probably inside the building.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

An Elite job photo showing a nest in masonry. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead into the wall cavity - the spot black house ants most often choose.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
A storm is the most reliable trigger for an indoor ant problem. Nests in soil and paving flood, and the colony relocates somewhere dry, meaning your building.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Honeydew is a sugar supply the colony will defend. We point out the plant on a South Windsor job because otherwise the trail simply re-establishes.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Baits are matched to the species and the season rather than used as a default.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Acreage means more harbourage. Stacked timber, disused sheds and open ground all support ants populations that eventually work their way inward.
Larger properties with outbuildings, so sheds, stables and stored timber are inspected alongside the house.
