Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

What we cover in Ryde, and how quickly we can get there.
Postcode 2112 covers Ryde and the streets immediately around it. At about 11.5 km north-west of the CBD it falls in the Ryde & the Northern District, where we have vans out daily. We run Ryde on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near West Ryde station, Ryde Park or Anderson Park, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Ryde for us.
We cover Putney, Meadowbank and Denistone East on the same runs as Ryde, which helps when ant problems are moving between neighbouring properties. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
The ant calls we take from Ryde are mostly older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
We also work the streets near Village Plaza Shopping Centre and across toward West Ryde Marketplace - the whole of 2112 is covered.
A colony's preference also shifts with the season. Spring brood-rearing wants protein; later in summer the same Ryde colony wants sugars.
Ant control is colony control. Everything else - sprays, powders, wiping the bench - is managing symptoms, and around Ryde that is why the same trail comes back every spring.
Pharaoh and some other small species nest indoors in warm voids and never go outside at all. In a Ryde house that changes the treatment completely - and makes spraying actively harmful, because it buds the colony.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Activity climbs from early spring as colonies start brood-rearing, peaks through the hot months and tails off in autumn. Treating in early spring around Ryde gets ahead of it rather than chasing it.
We are around Village Plaza Shopping Centre most weeks and cover every street in 2112, including the ones off the main roads.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in Ryde after a storm is almost always this.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in Ryde. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
At roughly 11.5 km north-west of the city, Ryde is on a route we run regularly. Same-day attendance is usually available. You will be given a time, not a window.
The housing stock is old and joined together. A shared wall cavity or a continuous sub-floor lets ants travel from one property to the next, which is why your neighbour matters.
Terraces and semis that share walls, roof voids and drainage - so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
Yes. Houses, townhouses, units, strata common property, rentals and commercial sites in Ryde 2112 are all part of what we do, and the paperwork is the kind agents accept.
Yes. The products are registered for this use and applied at label rates, and placement keeps them away from where children and animals go. Let us know at booking about pets, fish tanks or anyone with asthma and we will plan the visit around it.
You do not normally need to leave. Anything requiring an empty room is short, and you will know about it before the work starts.
Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
We do. Ryde and Putney, Meadowbank, Denistone East and Rhodes are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
