Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

What we cover in Sydney, and how quickly we can get there.
If you are in Sydney or anywhere else in 2000, you are in our Sydney CBD & Inner City patch, 0.3 km south-west of the CBD. Our technicians are through Sydney most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
The Sydney addresses we attend cluster around Gadigal station and Wynyard Park. Tumbalong Park is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
We cover Barangaroo, Millers Point and Haymarket on the same runs as Sydney, which helps when ant problems are moving between neighbouring properties. Apartment stock means shared services, so a single-unit treatment holds only if the rest of the building is not feeding it.
The bulk of our Sydney work is units in towers where the kitchen backs onto shared services. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
We also work the streets near Westfield Sydney and across toward Central Park Mall - the whole of 2000 is covered.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Barangaroo and Millers Point are covered on the same round, 2000 often has an earlier slot available.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
After heavy rain the opposite happens - flooded nests push colonies up and inside. Both extremes send ants into Sydney houses for different reasons.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Sydney kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine sand pushed up through paving, driveway and slab joints is coastal brown ants underneath, almost without exception.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.
Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
A colony's appetite shifts between sugar and protein with the brood cycle. Bait only works when it matches, which is why we test preferences on site.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
A non-repellent band around the footings, weep holes, door frames and paths catches ants as they come in.
Coastal brown ant nests under paving and along lawn edges get granular bait or direct treatment.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein | Granular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edges | Treating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Nocturnal, on sweet foods and insects | Trails inspected at night, bait placed near the nest, timber moisture fixed | Only ever treating during the day, when there is nothing to see |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor activity slows, but nests in heated walls keep going | Ants around heaters, hot water units and kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Anywhere in 2000, or over toward Barangaroo, is inside the area we treat at the same price.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in Sydney after a storm is almost always this.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Sweet, protein or oil-based baits chosen for the ant and the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. What changes the figure is the size of the building, how many areas are affected and the access. You get that number up front for Sydney 2000, with no call-out fee. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 0.3 km south-west of the city here, and Sydney is covered by the Sydney CBD & Inner City team.
Apartment stock concentrates waste and warmth into shared spaces - chutes, bin rooms, plant rooms - and that is what sustains ants here. The flat you live in is usually not the source.
It is apartment stock, which means the treatment has to account for risers and bin rooms as well as your own kitchen.
We do. A lot of our Sydney work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes, when it is applied properly. We use registered products at label rates and tell you which areas to keep clear and for how long. Mention pets, fish tanks or allergies when you book.
Usually not. Most of the work is done with you in the house, and where a room does need to be clear it is for a short period we will tell you about on arrival.
Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
We do. Sydney and Barangaroo, Millers Point, Haymarket and Pyrmont are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
