Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where Vaucluse sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Vaucluse sits about 5.9 km east of the CBD in the Eastern Suburbs, and postcode 2030 is one we are in most weeks. Our technicians are through Vaucluse most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Around Vaucluse we work the pockets near Woollahra Golf Club, Nielsen Park and Tingara Beach most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
The suburb sits in the Waverley, Randwick and Woollahra area. Dover Heights, Watsons Bay and Rose Bay are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. The coastal damp is the part that matters: sub-floors and ground-floor wet areas rarely dry out properly.
Around Vaucluse the pattern is fairly consistent: unit blocks a street or two back from the water, plus the odd beachfront cafe. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
The whole of 2030 is on our regular run.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Dover Heights and Watsons Bay are covered on the same round, 2030 often has an earlier slot available.
Where we find ants in a Vaucluse wall or frame, we look for the water first. Fix the leak and the timber dries; leave it and another colony will use the same cavity.
A colony's preference also shifts with the season. Spring brood-rearing wants protein; later in summer the same Vaucluse colony wants sugars.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Vaucluse garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

From an Elite job - a nest coming out of a mortar joint. Cracked mortar and weep holes open directly into the wall cavity, and that cavity is where a lot of black house ant colonies sit.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.
Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
You get a summary, advice on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sweet liquids and honeydew; protein while the colony is raising young | Gel bait placed on trails, non-repellent applied at weep holes and window frames | Wiping trails clean daily, so the colony simply forages on a different route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein | Granular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edges | Treating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies peak in size and stock up for the cooler months | Trails into the pantry and around pet bowls |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Honeydew is a sugar supply the colony will defend. We point out the plant on a Vaucluse job because otherwise the trail simply re-establishes.
Our Vaucluse runs take in Tingara Beach and continue across to the Dover Heights boundary - all the same service area.
Mulch against the wall, a shrub touching the eaves and a damp garden bed along the footings all put ants within reach of the building. In Vaucluse we routinely find the colony is in the garden, not the house.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Sweet, protein or oil-based baits chosen for the ant and the season.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.

Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 5.9 km east of the city here, and Vaucluse is covered by the Eastern Suburbs team.
Salt air and sandy ground keep sub-floors and ground-floor wet areas damp for most of the year, and sustained damp is exactly what ants need to establish.
A mix of walk-up blocks and free-standing homes, where the lower level and the sub-floor are what we concentrate on.
We do. A lot of our Vaucluse work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
Yes. Everything we use is registered for the purpose and applied at label rates, and we place product where people and animals do not go. Tell us about pets, aquariums or anyone with a respiratory condition at booking.
Most of the time you can carry on as normal. If a particular area needs to be empty we will flag it when we arrive and it is rarely more than a couple of hours.
For a standard Vaucluse home, one to two hours. We would rather tell you it will take longer up front than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit within the warranty period costs you nothing.
We cover the whole of Vaucluse, from the streets around Tingara Beach out to the suburb boundary and on into Dover Heights.
