Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Our Blacktown & Mount Druitt technicians cover Willmot and the rest of 2770 as a matter of course - it is only about 41.7 km west of the city. We travel out to Willmot on planned runs through the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Around Willmot we work the pockets near Yiraaldiya National Park, Emerton Village and Van Diemen Park most often, so the van is rarely far away when a job comes in.
The suburb sits in the Blacktown City area. Ropes Crossing, Shalvey and Lethbridge Park are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. Newer estate housing sits close together on small blocks, so what happens next door matters. We check the boundary and the fence line, not just the house.
Most Willmot bookings come in as recently built homes where the activity started at the boundary. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
We also work the area near Tandarra Park, and the rest of 2770 with it.
When you book, we confirm the 2770 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Ropes Crossing or Shalvey that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
What you are looking at is a supply line, not a population. Treat the line and the colony sends another one tomorrow along a slightly different route.
Ants in timber are a symptom. They do not create the damp, they move into timber the damp has already softened, so the leak matters more than the ants.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Those spring and summer swarms of winged ants are mating flights. If they are coming out inside the house, there may be a mature colony in the building.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Identification comes first. Then we trace the trails to the entry points and the nests themselves, whether those are in walls, paving, garden edges or the roof.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Food premises need bait placement that will not contaminate, and records of what was used where. That is a different job from a domestic callout.
After sustained rain in Willmot we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Trails lead somewhere, so we follow them to the colony instead of spraying the sighting.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Willmot and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. We are about 41.7 km west of the city here, and Willmot is covered by the Blacktown & Mount Druitt team.
On a newer estate the boundaries are close and the landscaping is young, so ants move between properties along fence lines with very little to stop them.
Newer homes, tightly spaced, usually slab on ground - so the treatment concentrates on the perimeter and entry points.
Yes. Houses, townhouses, units, strata common property, rentals and commercial sites in Willmot 2770 are all part of what we do, and the paperwork is the kind agents accept.
Yes. The products are registered for this use and applied at label rates, and placement keeps them away from where children and animals go. Let us know at booking about pets, fish tanks or anyone with asthma and we will plan the visit around it.
Usually not. Most ant control work is done with you there, and anything that needs the room vacated is for a short period we will tell you about beforehand.
Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
We do. Willmot and Ropes Crossing, Shalvey, Lethbridge Park and Blackett are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
