Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

Where Wollstonecraft sits, who covers it and what it costs.
We treat ants right across 2065. Wollstonecraft is roughly 4.3 km north-west of the city, which puts it well inside the Lower North Shore run our technicians work. Our technicians are through Wollstonecraft most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
A lot of our Wollstonecraft jobs are in the streets around Milray Reserve and Greenwich Baths, and we are out near Greenwood Plaza regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
North Sydney, Mosman, Willoughby, Lane Cove and Hunters Hill is the council area for Wollstonecraft, and we treat Greenwich, Waverton and North Sydney on the same schedule. Period homes near the harbour tend to have sub-floors, original timber and gardens running down to the boundary, so the inspection covers well beyond the kitchen.
Around Wollstonecraft the pattern is fairly consistent: older homes near the water with a sub-floor that never fully dries. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
Beyond that we are regularly around Lane Cove Country Club, and out as far as Wollstonecraft station. If you are anywhere in 2065, you are inside the area we run.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Greenwich and Waverton sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2065 come up regularly.
Pharaoh and some other small species nest indoors in warm voids and never go outside at all. In a Wollstonecraft house that changes the treatment completely - and makes spraying actively harmful, because it buds the colony.
If there are ants running up a shrub beside a Wollstonecraft house, look for scale or aphids on it. They are farming, and that food source is what sustains the colony.
Some species excavate soft, damp timber rather than eat it. Finding them in a Wollstonecraft window frame or bathroom wall usually means moisture has been getting into that timber for a while.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants entering from the external wall point to a cavity or garden-edge nest. Finding that entry is the first step.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Trails around the shower, vanity or toilet often mean moisture in the wall or a colony drinking from a slow leak.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in the lawn and garden beds. The sting is genuinely painful and in some people causes a serious allergic reaction.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
The difference matters. Retail sprays are repellent - ants sense them and avoid the treated area. Non-repellent products cannot be detected, so foragers cross them, pick up the active and take it back to the nest.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Honeydew and sugary liquids, switching to protein when there is brood | Sweet gel on active trails and a non-repellent perimeter at frames and weep holes | Washing the trail down each day, which only relocates the foraging route |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein | Granular oil-based bait across the paving and along lawn edges | Treating one sand pile with boiling water or insecticide when there are dozens more |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar outdoors | Direct nest treatment in lawns and garden beds | Digging into the nest by hand and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
If your Wollstonecraft paving keeps developing little sand volcanoes, sweeping them away is treating the spoil rather than the nest. The colony is in the bedding sand under the slab.
We are around Greenwich Baths most weeks and cover every street in 2065, including the ones off the main roads.
Brick cavities are dry, warm and undisturbed, which makes them ideal nesting. The weep hole is the doorway and it is usually where we start on a Wollstonecraft job.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
The bait is chosen for the species and the time of year - sweet, protein or oil-based.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.

Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 4.3 km north-west of the city here, and Wollstonecraft is covered by the Lower North Shore team.
Much of the housing near the harbour is old, with suspended floors and sub-floors that hold damp. Add mature gardens running to the boundary and ants have both shelter and moisture.
Period homes and converted apartments with original timber, sub-floors and established gardens, all of which get inspected.
