Days 1 to 3
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.

Where Balmain East sits, who covers it and what it costs.
We treat cockroaches right across 2041. Balmain East is roughly 2.1 km north-west of the city, which puts it well inside the Inner West run our technicians work. Our technicians are through Balmain East most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Quarantine Boat Depot Beach and The Rocks Centre in Balmain East, and John Street Square station is close enough to be on the same run.
Balmain East is in the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area, and we cover Balmain, Birchgrove and Rozelle on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your cockroach problem has come from next door. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
The cockroach calls we take from Balmain East are mostly terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
We cover the remainder of 2041 as well, from Ewenton Park through to King George V Recreation Centre.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2041 run the day before, and if Balmain or Birchgrove is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Cockroaches avoid light, so seeing one in daylight is not a chance encounter - it usually means the harbourage is crowded enough to push individuals out into the open. A daytime sighting in a Balmain East kitchen is a sign of scale, not bad luck.
The population is not on your bench. It is in the warm, dark, humid gaps - behind the kickboard, inside the dishwasher housing, under the fridge motor, in the hinge of a cupboard door. A Balmain East treatment that only covers surfaces has not touched the nest.
Cockroaches do not respect a lease boundary. In a Balmain East block they move through service risers, shared drains and the cavity between units, so treating one kitchen in a building with a problem is money spent on a holding pattern.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, roughly 12 to 15 mm long. It lives indoors near warmth, food and moisture, and it is the species that breeds fastest inside a kitchen.

The largest one we deal with, around 4 cm and reddish-brown. Pits, sewers, grease traps and subfloors are where it breeds; the kitchen is somewhere it passes through at night.

Similar in size to the American cockroach but with pale yellow edges near the head and along the wings. Despite the name it is an outdoor species that comes in from gardens, mulch and subfloors.

A small cockroach with light bands across the body, found away from water in warm dry positions: behind frames, in electrical fittings, in cupboards at height.

An Elite job photo of German cockroach activity on a Sydney inspection. Egg cases, shed skins and droppings in the harbourage are how we work out what we are dealing with.

From an Elite commercial job: harbourage found inside kitchen equipment. The motor housing, the door seal and the hollow leg hold warmth after close and almost never get cleaned out.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daytime sightings near the sink, plus specks of droppings along the joins in cupboards | German cockroach - the one species that lives and breeds indoors | Hinges and drawer runners, the gap behind fridge and dishwasher, behind kickboards, inside motor housings | A bait rotation paired with a growth regulator, placed into cracks rather than sprayed about |
| A single big one after dark by the laundry tub, the bathroom or a floor drain | American cockroach | Stormwater and sewer pits, the space under the floor, floor wastes that have dried out | Treating the pits and drains, the subfloor, and sealing the gaps where pipes pass through |
| Large ones marked with yellow near the head, found in the garage or wandering in from the yard | Australian cockroach | Mulched beds, leaf litter, woodpiles, and the roof space above | Work outside: the perimeter, the roof void, and the harbourage in the garden itself |
| Small cockroaches found upstairs or in bedrooms rather than around the sink | Brown-banded cockroach | Dry, warm furniture and the inside of electrical appliances | Targeted bait placement through living and sleeping spaces |
| Cockroaches that always come back to the flat no matter how well you treat your own kitchen | German cockroach moving around the block | Shared service risers, the bin room, and cavities inside the party walls | Treating the whole building together. See strata pest control |

One call to a licensed Sydney technician gets you honest advice and a fixed quote within 30 minutes.
The egg case - around 30 eggs, carried by the female until just before hatching - is shielded from anything applied to a surface. That is why the population reappears after a DIY attempt.
One female produces several egg cases, and in a warm kitchen the young reach maturity within weeks. That is how a handful becomes a serious problem in a short time.
A repellent product scatters rather than clears - deeper into the wall void, through to the unit next door - and leaves residue where food is prepared.
Cockroach droppings, saliva and cast skins are recognised triggers for allergies and asthma, so a lingering infestation is a health issue as well as a nuisance.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
First we establish which cockroach it is, then map where it lives - torch and mirror into hinges, motor cavities, behind kickboards and into wall voids. Everything after this depends on that map.
We identify the build-up that is feeding them and tell you what to deal with first. The less competing food there is, the harder the bait works.
We place gel in precise dots along their travel routes rather than spraying. They feed, return to the harbourage, and the effect spreads through the population by contact and feeding.
A growth regulator prevents the young reaching breeding age, while dust treats the wall voids and cavities that gel placement cannot get into.
For American and Australian cockroaches we treat pits, floor wastes, the subfloor and roof void, because those species live outside the kitchen and travel in.
Everything is recorded in writing. Still seeing heavy activity after a fortnight, or it returns inside the 6-month warranty on a general treatment? We return at no cost.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Effective on the one you are aiming at | Leaves egg cases and wall voids untouched, and scatters the rest further in |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Covers a whole room's open surfaces at once | Harbourage is untouched, benches end up with residue, and the population spreads out |
| Retail bait stations | Can help if you have only seen a few | The bait volume is small, and competing food such as grease wins out |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Eaten and shared in the hiding places; formulations can be rotated if cockroaches avoid one | Needs a clean kitchen and time to work, usually days to a couple of weeks |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops the young ever reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Acts slowly by design, so bait always goes in with it |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.
Expect activity to taper off. The bait dots in hinges and cracks need to stay put, and nothing should be sprayed over them - that is what makes cockroaches avoid bait.
Still seeing them? Tell the agent or building manager, since the source is often a neighbouring lot. Apartment pest control explains what a building-wide job involves.
Steady activity at the two-week mark, or a return inside 6 months of a general treatment, means a warranty re-treatment - ring 1300 313 373.
In older Balmain East buildings a cockroach population can live entirely in the drain line and come up at night. Treating the kitchen and ignoring the pipework means you are treating the visitors, not the residents.
The pattern we see across Balmain East and the wider Inner West is a surge after the first properly warm week, then steady pressure until autumn. Treating before that surge is far cheaper than treating after it.
From Quarantine Boat Depot Beach through to the Balmain side of Balmain East, it is all one service area for us - same price, same response time.
German cockroaches get baits and growth regulators, and drain species get pit and subfloor work. The species decides the treatment.
Gel goes into the cracks and hinges. Nothing gets sprayed across the bench you prepare food on.
We cover everything from one apartment to a full commercial kitchen, scheduled around your trading hours.

Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 2.1 km north-west of the city here, and Balmain East is covered by the Inner West team.
The housing stock is old and joined together. A shared wall cavity or a continuous sub-floor lets cockroaches travel from one property to the next, which is why your neighbour matters.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.
Yes - freestanding homes, townhouses, apartments, rentals and business premises in Balmain East 2041 are all covered, with documentation suitable for an agent or a strata manager.
It is, applied properly. We put product into cracks, voids and stations rather than across open surfaces, and we will tell you what to stay off and for how long before we leave.
You do not normally need to leave. Anything requiring an empty room is short, and you will know about it before the work starts.
Usually between one and two hours on site. Bigger properties and heavier infestations take more, and that is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Ring us if activity picks up again inside that period and we will arrange the return.
We cover the whole of Balmain East, from the streets around Quarantine Boat Depot Beach out to the suburb boundary and on into Balmain.
