Days 1 to 3
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.

Blackett sits about 39.4 km west of the CBD in the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, and postcode 2770 is one we are in most weeks. We cover Blackett on scheduled runs through the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
A lot of our Blackett jobs are in the streets around Emerton Village and Popondetta Park, and we are out near Charlie Lowles Leisure Centre regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
This is the Blacktown City area, and our runs here also take in Bidwill, Hebersham and Emerton. On a newer estate the houses are near-identical and tightly spaced, which means a problem in one tends to turn up in the ones either side.
The cockroach calls we take from Blackett are mostly estate houses with narrow side access and a shared fence line. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
The whole of 2770 is on our regular run.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Bidwill and Hebersham sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2770 come up regularly.
Cockroaches walk through drains and then across benchtops, carrying bacteria mechanically rather than biting. For a Blackett household with young children or anyone immunocompromised that is the real argument for treating properly.
Cockroach calls climb from October and peak through February, because warmth shortens the time a nymph needs to reach breeding age. The same population that was manageable in a Blackett kitchen in winter can double over a hot month.
Where Blackett housing shares walls and roof voids - semis, terraces, unit blocks - the population is usually shared too. We say so up front rather than treating one flat and letting you discover it a month later.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, roughly 12 to 15 mm long. It lives indoors near warmth, food and moisture, and it is the species that breeds fastest inside a kitchen.

The largest one we deal with, around 4 cm and reddish-brown. Pits, sewers, grease traps and subfloors are where it breeds; the kitchen is somewhere it passes through at night.

About the same size as the American, distinguished by pale yellow margins behind the head and along the wing edges. It is an outdoor cockroach - mulch, garden beds and subfloors - that wanders inside.

Small, with light bands across the back. Unlike the others it avoids damp, preferring warm dry places up high - behind wall hangings, inside appliance housings and in upper cupboards.

One of our Sydney inspections, showing German cockroach activity. The harbourage itself tells the story: droppings, cast skins and egg cases give us both the species and the scale.

From an Elite commercial job: harbourage found inside kitchen equipment. The motor housing, the door seal and the hollow leg hold warmth after close and almost never get cleaned out.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches moving about in daylight, and droppings like ground pepper along shelf edges | German cockroach, well established by the time they show in the day | Door hinges, the voids behind white goods, the kickboard space, the inside of appliances | Indoor work: bait rotation, a growth regulator, and placement into every crack and crevice |
| A single big one after dark by the laundry tub, the bathroom or a floor drain | American cockroach | Stormwater and sewer pits, the space under the floor, floor wastes that have dried out | Treating the pits and drains, the subfloor, and sealing the gaps where pipes pass through |
| Big cockroaches with pale yellow margins, usually in the garage or arriving from outside | Australian cockroach | Garden mulch, leaf litter, stacked firewood and the roof cavity | Perimeter treatment outside, dusting the roof void, and dealing with garden harbourage |
| Small cockroaches behind frames and in the TV cabinet, nowhere near a tap | Brown-banded cockroach | Warm dry furniture, and electrical appliances that run warm | Baiting concentrated in the rooms you live and sleep in |
| A unit that goes quiet for a couple of weeks and then has cockroaches again | German cockroach coming through from another lot | The risers, bin room and wall cavities the units have in common | A treatment coordinated across the building. See strata pest control |

One call to a licensed Sydney technician gets you honest advice and a fixed quote within 30 minutes.
Each German cockroach egg case carries roughly 30 eggs and stays with the female almost until they hatch. Surface sprays never reach it, so the following generation arrives regardless.
Several egg cases per female, and nymphs maturing in weeks where it is warm - the arithmetic is why cockroach numbers climb so steeply once they are established.
Supermarket sprays and bombs repel. The colony moves further into the cavity, or next door, and your benchtops end up with residue on them.
What they leave behind matters: droppings, saliva and cast skins are known asthma and allergy triggers, so this is a health question as much as a comfort one.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
Step one is knowing which cockroach you have. Step two is finding where it shelters: torch and inspection mirror through hinges, appliance cavities, kickboards and wall voids.
Where build-up is feeding them, you will get a short list of what to clean and the order to do it in - bait has to out-compete everything else available.
Professional gel goes down as small dots inside the cracks they already use. A cockroach feeds, goes home, and the product moves through the rest of the colony from there.
A growth regulator shuts down the next generation, and dust goes into the voids and cavities where gel simply cannot be placed.
Pits, floor wastes, the subfloor and the roof void get treated for the American and Australian species - they come in from there, so that is where it has to be done.
A written summary comes with the job. Heavy activity still there after two weeks, or a return within 6 months of a general treatment, and we come back for nothing.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Quick on a cockroach you can actually reach | No effect on egg cases or harbourage, and it pushes the others deeper into cavities |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Puts product across everything out in the open | Does not get into harbourage, coats your benchtops, and can split the colony up |
| Retail bait stations | Worth using when numbers are genuinely low | There is very little bait in them, and crumbs or grease will beat them every time |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Taken back into the harbourage and passed on; we can change formulation if they go off one | Wants a clean kitchen behind it, and takes days to a fortnight rather than minutes |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops nymphs maturing into breeding adults, which breaks the egg-case cycle | Works slowly, so it is always paired with bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.
You should see a steady decline. Leave the gel where we put it in hinges and cracks, and keep your own insecticide away from it, or they will refuse to feed.
Keep the agent or building manager informed if it does not settle; cockroaches travel between flats. Our apartment pest control page covers the options for a whole block.
Steady activity at the two-week mark, or a return inside 6 months of a general treatment, means a warranty re-treatment - ring 1300 313 373.
Floor wastes, overflow pipes and the gap where a waste pipe passes through a cupboard base are all cockroach routes. A dry floor waste in a Blackett laundry is an open door, and a cup of water down it once a week closes it.
Sydney does not give cockroaches an off-season. Around Blackett the warm, humid stretch from October through March drives breeding hardest, but a heated Blacktown & Mount Druitt home keeps a kitchen population going through winter without pause.
A good share of our Blackett work sits close to Emerton Village, though the back streets and the Bidwill boundary are just as familiar.
What we use depends on what you have: baits and growth regulators for German cockroaches, pit and subfloor treatment for the drain species.
Bait placed in cracks and hinges, not a blanket spray over food preparation surfaces.
From single apartments to commercial kitchens serviced outside trading hours.
