Expect more sightings, not fewer - slow-moving cockroaches out in the open or dead on the floor. That is the bait and growth regulator taking effect. Sweep them up.

Where Centennial Park sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Postcode 2021 covers Centennial Park and the streets immediately around it. At about 3.6 km south-east of the CBD it falls in the Eastern Suburbs, where we have vans out daily. Our technicians are through Centennial Park most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
A lot of our Centennial Park jobs are in the streets around Westfield Bondi Junction and Bondi Junction station, and we are out near Centennial Park regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
We work under the Waverley, Randwick and Woollahra area here, and Moore Park, Paddington and Woollahra are all on the same route, which matters when cockroach problems are moving between adjoining properties. Being this close to the coast, sub-floors and ground-floor bathrooms stay damp most of the year, which is the condition that keeps activity going.
What we see in Centennial Park is unit blocks a street or two back from the water, plus the odd beachfront cafe. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
The rest of 2021 is covered too, including the pockets around Allianz Stadium and Fred Hollows Reserve.
The 2021 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Moore Park and Paddington fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
If you are seeing them with the lights on, the numbers behind the kickboard are substantial. We treat a daytime report in Centennial Park as an established infestation rather than a few strays.
Floor wastes, overflow pipes and the gap where a waste pipe passes through a cupboard base are all cockroach routes. A dry floor waste in a Centennial Park laundry is an open door, and a cup of water down it once a week closes it.
One German cockroach egg case holds about forty young, and a female carries it until days before they hatch. That is why a kitchen in Centennial Park can look clear for a fortnight and then be worse than when you started. Kill the adults you can see and you have removed maybe a tenth of what is living behind the kickboards.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, roughly 12 to 15 mm long. It lives indoors near warmth, food and moisture, and it is the species that breeds fastest inside a kitchen.

Reddish-brown and as long as 4 cm. It belongs to the drainage system - sewers, stormwater pits, grease traps, the subfloor - and arrives in the kitchen overnight from there.

Similar in size to the American cockroach, told apart by the yellow margins at the head and wing edges. An outdoor species - gardens, mulch, the subfloor - that makes its way in.

A small species with pale bands across the body that prefers warm, dry spots higher up, such as behind picture frames, in electrical housings and inside cupboards away from water.

An Elite job photo of German cockroach activity on a Sydney inspection. Egg cases, shed skins and droppings in the harbourage are how we work out what we are dealing with.

From an Elite commercial job: harbourage found inside kitchen equipment. The motor housing, the door seal and the hollow leg hold warmth after close and almost never get cleaned out.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cockroaches barely 15 mm out in the open by day, with dark pepper-like specks where cupboards meet | German cockroach, and an established one | Inside hinges, appliance cavities, the kickboard void, the housings of the appliances themselves | Gel baits rotated through the job, a growth regulator, and crack-and-crevice application indoors |
| A single big one after dark by the laundry tub, the bathroom or a floor drain | American cockroach | Stormwater and sewer pits, the space under the floor, floor wastes that have dried out | Treating the pits and drains, the subfloor, and sealing the gaps where pipes pass through |
| Big yellow-margined cockroaches that seem to come from the garden rather than the kitchen | Australian cockroach | Garden mulch, leaf litter and woodpiles, plus the roof cavity | Treating outside: the perimeter, the roof void, and the harbourage in the beds themselves |
| Little banded cockroaches behind a picture frame or inside the TV unit, away from any water | Brown-banded cockroach | Dry warm spots in furniture and inside electrical gear | Targeted baiting in the rooms you live and sleep in, not the kitchen |
| Cockroaches that always come back to the flat no matter how well you treat your own kitchen | German cockroach moving around the block | Shared service risers, the bin room, and cavities inside the party walls | Treating the whole building together. See strata pest control |

A licensed Sydney technician will talk it through with you and give you a fixed quote within half an hour.
The egg case - around 30 eggs, carried by the female until just before hatching - is shielded from anything applied to a surface. That is why the population reappears after a DIY attempt.
A female will make several egg cases, and in kitchen warmth her young are breeding within weeks. Small numbers do not stay small.
Because they repel, bombs and aerosols spread the problem: deeper into the walls, into the neighbouring unit, and over the surfaces you prepare food on.
What they leave behind matters: droppings, saliva and cast skins are known asthma and allergy triggers, so this is a health question as much as a comfort one.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
We confirm the species and use a torch and inspection mirror to find harbourage: hinges, appliance housings, kickboards and wall voids. The treatment follows what we find, not a standard routine.
If grease or food residue is sustaining the population, we point out exactly what to clean and in what order. Bait competes with whatever else is available, so this step changes the result.
Professional gel goes down as small dots inside the cracks they already use. A cockroach feeds, goes home, and the product moves through the rest of the colony from there.
Two products with different jobs: the growth regulator stops nymphs maturing, and dust carries the treatment into voids and cavities beyond the reach of gel.
American and Australian cockroaches are treated at source: pits, floor wastes, subfloor and roof void. Treating the kitchen alone just handles the ones that already made it in.
Everything is recorded in writing. Still seeing heavy activity after a fortnight, or it returns inside the 6-month warranty on a general treatment? We return at no cost.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Works on a cockroach you can actually see | Egg cases and harbourage are untouched, and it repels the others further in |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Easy coverage of the exposed parts of a room | Never reaches the hiding places, leaves residue where you cook, and scatters them |
| Retail bait stations | Fine as a first step on a small problem | Not enough bait to matter, and any food left about is more attractive |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Taken back into the harbourage and passed on; we can change formulation if they go off one | Wants a clean kitchen behind it, and takes days to a fortnight rather than minutes |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops the young ever reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Acts slowly by design, so bait always goes in with it |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.

You should see a steady decline. Leave the gel where we put it in hinges and cracks, and keep your own insecticide away from it, or they will refuse to feed.
If it keeps going, let the agent or building manager know - cockroaches move between units readily. There is more on co-ordinated work on our apartment pest control page.

A cockroach sighting in a Centennial Park food business is a compliance problem before it is a pest problem. The program we run is built so the paperwork exists before anyone asks for it.
We are around Fred Hollows Reserve and the streets behind it most weeks, and we cover every address in 2021, not just the main roads.
The pattern we see across Centennial Park and the wider Eastern Suburbs is a surge after the first properly warm week, then steady pressure until autumn. Treating before that surge is far cheaper than treating after it.
What we use depends on what you have: baits and growth regulators for German cockroaches, pit and subfloor treatment for the drain species.
Gel baits in cracks and hinges, not blanket spraying across benches where you prepare food.
Single units through to commercial kitchens, with food premises worked outside trading hours.
Six months on a general treatment - if they come back inside it, so do we, at no charge.

At roughly 3.6 km south-east of the city, Centennial Park is on a route we run regularly. Same-day attendance is usually available. You will be given a time, not a window.
Being near the water means humidity that never really drops. Sub-floors stay moist, lower levels stay cool and damp, and cockroaches do well in both.
A mix of walk-up blocks and free-standing homes, where the lower level and the sub-floor are what we concentrate on.
Yes - freestanding homes, townhouses, apartments, rentals and business premises in Centennial Park 2021 are all covered, with documentation suitable for an agent or a strata manager.
It is, as long as you follow what we tell you on the day - usually keeping off treated surfaces for a couple of hours. Let us know at booking about young children, pets or an aquarium.
Usually not. Most of the work is done with you in the house, and where a room does need to be clear it is for a short period we will tell you about on arrival.
Between one and two hours covers the majority of jobs. We do not book so tightly that a technician has to cut a job short.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
Yes. As well as Centennial Park we cover Moore Park, Paddington, Woollahra and Queens Park on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
