Days 1 to 3
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.

Cremorne sits about 5 km north of the CBD in the Lower North Shore, and postcode 2090 is one we are in most weeks. Our technicians are through Cremorne most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
The Cremorne addresses we attend cluster around Corner Beach and Big Bear Village. Cammeray Golf Course is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
Cremorne is in the North Sydney, Mosman, Willoughby, Lane Cove and Hunters Hill area, and we cover Neutral Bay, Mosman and Cammeray on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your cockroach problem has come from next door. Period homes near the harbour tend to have sub-floors, original timber and gardens running down to the boundary, so the inspection covers well beyond the kitchen.
What we see in Cremorne is older homes near the water with a sub-floor that never fully dries. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
We also work the streets near Winnie Street Laneway Reserve and across toward Sydney Harbour National Park - the whole of 2090 is covered.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2090 run the day before, and if Neutral Bay or Mosman is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
In older Cremorne buildings a cockroach population can live entirely in the drain line and come up at night. Treating the kitchen and ignoring the pipework means you are treating the visitors, not the residents.
A cockroach can last weeks on almost nothing to eat but only days without water. That is why perfectly clean Cremorne kitchens still get them: a dripping tap, a sweating pipe or a damp dishwasher seal is enough.
The allergen is the part people underestimate. Cockroach droppings and shed skins are a recognised asthma trigger, and in a Cremorne unit with an established population the load builds up in soft furnishings.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Small, 12 to 15 mm, light brown, marked with two dark stripes behind the head. This is the indoor breeder: it wants warmth, food and damp, and a kitchen supplies all three.

Reddish-brown and as long as 4 cm. It belongs to the drainage system - sewers, stormwater pits, grease traps, the subfloor - and arrives in the kitchen overnight from there.

As big as the American but marked with pale yellow along the edge of the wings and behind the head. The name misleads: this one lives outside in mulch and garden beds and only comes indoors to look about.

Small and marked with pale bands. It is the one that does not want water, so it settles high and dry - behind pictures, inside electrical housings, in the top cupboards.

An Elite inspection photo showing German cockroach activity in Sydney. What we look for is the evidence - droppings, cast skins, egg cases - because it identifies the species and how long it has been there.

From a commercial kitchen we service: cockroach harbourage inside the machinery. Hollow legs, door seals and motor housings keep their heat overnight and are almost never cleaned.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Little ones out on the bench while the lights are on, with gritty black specks in cupboard corners | German cockroach - daytime activity means a large population | Cupboard hinges, the warm cavities behind the dishwasher and fridge, under kickboards, inside appliance housings | Rotated gel baits, an insect growth regulator, and product worked into cracks and crevices |
| One or two large cockroaches at night near the laundry, bathroom or floor waste | American cockroach | Sewer and stormwater pits, subfloor, dry floor-waste traps | Drain and pit treatment, subfloor, sealing gaps around pipes |
| Large ones marked with yellow near the head, found in the garage or wandering in from the yard | Australian cockroach | Mulched beds, leaf litter, woodpiles, and the roof space above | Work outside: the perimeter, the roof void, and the harbourage in the garden itself |
| Little banded cockroaches behind a picture frame or inside the TV unit, away from any water | Brown-banded cockroach | Dry warm spots in furniture and inside electrical gear | Targeted baiting in the rooms you live and sleep in, not the kitchen |
| A unit that goes quiet for a couple of weeks and then has cockroaches again | German cockroach coming through from another lot | The risers, bin room and wall cavities the units have in common | A treatment coordinated across the building. See strata pest control |

A German cockroach egg case holds around 30 eggs, and the female carries it until shortly before hatching. Killing adults on the surface leaves the next generation untouched.
One female produces several egg cases, and in a warm kitchen the young reach maturity within weeks. That is how a handful becomes a serious problem in a short time.
Supermarket sprays and bombs repel. The colony moves further into the cavity, or next door, and your benchtops end up with residue on them.
Cast skins, droppings and saliva are recognised asthma and allergy triggers, which makes a long-running infestation a health issue rather than just an annoyance.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
First we establish which cockroach it is, then map where it lives - torch and mirror into hinges, motor cavities, behind kickboards and into wall voids. Everything after this depends on that map.
Where build-up is feeding them, you will get a short list of what to clean and the order to do it in - bait has to out-compete everything else available.
Professional gel goes down as small dots inside the cracks they already use. A cockroach feeds, goes home, and the product moves through the rest of the colony from there.
An insect growth regulator stops nymphs becoming breeding adults, and dust goes into wall voids and cavities where gel cannot reach.
The outdoor species need outdoor treatment - stormwater pits, floor wastes, under the floor and the roof cavity, which is where they actually live before they reach your kitchen.
Everything is recorded in writing. Still seeing heavy activity after a fortnight, or it returns inside the 6-month warranty on a general treatment? We return at no cost.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Quick on a cockroach you can actually reach | No effect on egg cases or harbourage, and it pushes the others deeper into cavities |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Reaches open floor and bench area without effort | Misses the harbourage entirely, leaves residue where you prepare food, and disperses them |
| Retail bait stations | Has a place when you have only seen one or two | Very little bait in each, and any crumbs or grease will out-compete it |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Fed on where they shelter and passed between them, with formulations rotated as needed | Only works once competing food is gone, and takes days to a couple of weeks |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops the young ever reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Acts slowly by design, so bait always goes in with it |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.

You should see a steady decline. Leave the gel where we put it in hinges and cracks, and keep your own insecticide away from it, or they will refuse to feed.
Where activity continues, raise it with your agent or strata manager, because they cross between lots. See apartment pest control for how a building-wide treatment runs.
If you still see steady activity after two weeks, or cockroaches return within 6 months of a general treatment, call 1300 313 373 for a warranty re-treatment.
For a Cremorne cafe or restaurant the standard is different: a documented program, a site plan with numbered monitoring points, and a report an auditor will accept. We work to that rather than turning up with a spray pack.
The pattern we see across Cremorne and the wider Lower North Shore is a surge after the first properly warm week, then steady pressure until autumn. Treating before that surge is far cheaper than treating after it.
Cockroaches do not respect a lease boundary. In a Cremorne block they move through service risers, shared drains and the cavity between units, so treating one kitchen in a building with a problem is money spent on a holding pattern.
Treatment follows identification. Indoor German cockroaches need bait and a growth regulator; drain-dwelling species need the pits and subfloor treated.
Precise gel placement into cracks and hinges rather than spraying the surfaces you cook on.
One flat or a whole commercial kitchen - food premises are done outside trading hours.
Six months on a general treatment - if they come back inside it, so do we, at no charge.

Same-day attendance is usually available. Cremorne sits roughly 5 km north of the CBD, inside our Lower North Shore run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Old houses, steep blocks and heavy planting. The lower level cut into the slope stays cool and damp, and that is where cockroaches settle well before anyone notices them upstairs.
Period homes and converted apartments with original timber, sub-floors and established gardens, all of which get inspected.

Normally you can stay. Some treatments mean keeping out of a particular room briefly, and we will flag that when we arrive so you can plan around it.
An hour to two hours covers most jobs. The size of the building and the extent of the problem are what change it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Call us if activity picks up again and we will arrange the return visit.
