Cockroaches coming out in daylight and moving sluggishly is the normal first sign. The bait and growth regulator are working. Sweep up what you find and carry on.

What we cover in Homebush, and how quickly we can get there.
Our Inner West technicians cover Homebush and the rest of 2140 as a matter of course - it is only about 12.1 km west of the city. We run Homebush on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Most weeks we are somewhere between North Strathfield station and Bill Boyce Reserve in Homebush, and Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre is close enough to be on the same run.
Homebush is in the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area, and we cover Homebush West, North Strathfield and Concord West on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your cockroach problem has come from next door. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
Around Homebush the pattern is fairly consistent: older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
We cover the remainder of 2140 as well, from Sydney Markets Plaza through to Concord Golf Club.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Homebush West and North Strathfield sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2140 come up regularly.
If cockroaches keep appearing in a Homebush bathroom rather than the kitchen, the drain is the first thing we check. They travel the pipework between units and come up wherever the seal has dried out.
The odour is a useful diagnostic. We can often tell from it how long a Homebush problem has been running, and it is also why treatment includes advice on what to clean or discard afterwards.
German cockroaches are small, light brown, and stay indoors near warmth and water. Australian and smoky-brown cockroaches are bigger, darker and come in from outside. In Homebush we see both, and they need completely different treatments - one is a kitchen job, the other is a perimeter job.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Small, 12 to 15 mm, light brown, marked with two dark stripes behind the head. This is the indoor breeder: it wants warmth, food and damp, and a kitchen supplies all three.

Reddish-brown and as long as 4 cm. It belongs to the drainage system - sewers, stormwater pits, grease traps, the subfloor - and arrives in the kitchen overnight from there.

Similar in size to the American cockroach, told apart by the yellow margins at the head and wing edges. An outdoor species - gardens, mulch, the subfloor - that makes its way in.

A small species with pale bands across the body that prefers warm, dry spots higher up, such as behind picture frames, in electrical housings and inside cupboards away from water.

From one of our own inspections: German cockroach harbourage in a Sydney kitchen. The droppings, shed skins and egg cases are what we read to judge the species and the size of the population.

From a commercial kitchen we service: cockroach harbourage inside the machinery. Hollow legs, door seals and motor housings keep their heat overnight and are almost never cleaned.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cockroaches barely 15 mm out in the open by day, with dark pepper-like specks where cupboards meet | German cockroach, and an established one | Inside hinges, appliance cavities, the kickboard void, the housings of the appliances themselves | Gel baits rotated through the job, a growth regulator, and crack-and-crevice application indoors |
| A single big one after dark by the laundry tub, the bathroom or a floor drain | American cockroach | Stormwater and sewer pits, the space under the floor, floor wastes that have dried out | Treating the pits and drains, the subfloor, and sealing the gaps where pipes pass through |
| Big yellow-margined cockroaches that seem to come from the garden rather than the kitchen | Australian cockroach | Garden mulch, leaf litter and woodpiles, plus the roof cavity | Treating outside: the perimeter, the roof void, and the harbourage in the beds themselves |
| Small cockroaches behind frames and in the TV cabinet, nowhere near a tap | Brown-banded cockroach | Warm dry furniture, and electrical appliances that run warm | Baiting concentrated in the rooms you live and sleep in |
| A flat that clears for a fortnight and then has cockroaches again | German cockroach moving through the building | Shared risers, the bin room, and cavities running between walls | A coordinated treatment across the block. See strata pest control |

A licensed Sydney technician will talk it through with you and give you a fixed quote within half an hour.
A German cockroach egg case holds about 30 eggs and travels with the female until hatching is close. Kill the adults you can see and the next generation still arrives.
Each female can produce several egg cases in her life, and the young mature in weeks in a warm kitchen. A few cockroaches become an infestation quickly.
Because they repel, bombs and aerosols spread the problem: deeper into the walls, into the neighbouring unit, and over the surfaces you prepare food on.
Cockroach droppings, saliva and cast skins are recognised triggers for allergies and asthma, so a lingering infestation is a health issue as well as a nuisance.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
Step one is knowing which cockroach you have. Step two is finding where it shelters: torch and inspection mirror through hinges, appliance cavities, kickboards and wall voids.
If grease or food residue is sustaining the population, we point out exactly what to clean and in what order. Bait competes with whatever else is available, so this step changes the result.
Small dots of professional gel bait go into the cracks cockroaches travel through. They eat, return to harbourage and the effect passes through the population.
Two products with different jobs: the growth regulator stops nymphs maturing, and dust carries the treatment into voids and cavities beyond the reach of gel.
American and Australian cockroaches are treated at source: pits, floor wastes, subfloor and roof void. Treating the kitchen alone just handles the ones that already made it in.
A written summary comes with the job. Heavy activity still there after two weeks, or a return within 6 months of a general treatment, and we come back for nothing.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Deals with the individual in front of you | Never touches the egg cases or the voids, and drives the rest further into the walls |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Gets product onto every open surface at once | Harbourage is missed, benches end up with residue, and the colony splits up |
| Retail bait stations | Worth using when numbers are genuinely low | There is very little bait in them, and crumbs or grease will beat them every time |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Eaten and shared in the hiding places; formulations can be rotated if cockroaches avoid one | Needs a clean kitchen and time to work, usually days to a couple of weeks |
| Insect growth regulator | Prevents the young reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Slow by design, so we never use it on its own - it goes in with bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
Cockroaches coming out in daylight and moving sluggishly is the normal first sign. The bait and growth regulator are working. Sweep up what you find and carry on.
Through the second week activity should fall away. Leave the bait in place in hinges and cracks, and resist spraying anything over it, which puts cockroaches off feeding.
Still seeing them? Tell the agent or building manager, since the source is often a neighbouring lot. Apartment pest control explains what a building-wide job involves.
Call 1300 313 373 if activity is still steady after a fortnight, or if they come back within the 6 months a general treatment covers. The re-treatment is under warranty.
Council officers want records, not reassurance. For food premises around Homebush we provide the treatment schedule, the products used, the monitoring point locations and the findings from each visit, in a form you can hand over.
A good share of our Homebush work sits close to Sydney Markets Plaza, though the back streets and the Homebush West boundary are just as familiar.
Humidity is the driver. In the Inner West the summer months bring the fastest breeding, and the mild winters mean a population indoors never really slows - it just gets quieter.
Treatment follows identification. Indoor German cockroaches need bait and a growth regulator; drain-dwelling species need the pits and subfloor treated.
Gel baits in cracks and hinges, not blanket spraying across benches where you prepare food.
Apartments through to commercial kitchens, with food businesses serviced when they are closed.
Six months on a general treatment - if they come back inside it, so do we, at no charge.

Get a Free QuoteA cockroach treatment starts from $89. What changes the figure is the size of the building, how many areas are affected and the access. You get that number up front for Homebush 2140, with no call-out fee. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 12.1 km west of the city here, and Homebush is covered by the Inner West team.
Terraces and semis share walls, roof voids and sub-floors, so cockroaches move between houses without ever going outside. That is the single biggest factor here.
Joined housing with ageing drainage. That combination decides where product goes far more than the floor plan does.
We do. A lot of our Homebush work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
It is, provided the instructions are followed. We will tell you what to keep clear of and for how long before we leave. Let us know about children, pets or fish tanks when you book.
Usually not. Most cockroach control work is done with you there, and anything that needs the room vacated is for a short period we will tell you about beforehand.
Typically one to two hours on site. What extends it is size, access and how far the problem has gone, all of which are accounted for in the quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit within the warranty period costs you nothing.
