Days 1 to 3
Expect more sightings, not fewer - slow-moving cockroaches out in the open or dead on the floor. That is the bait and growth regulator taking effect. Sweep them up.

Local technicians, fixed prices and a written report for every job in Longueville.
Longueville is part of the Lower North Shore, 5.7 km or so north-west of the GPO, and 2066 is a postcode we know well. Our technicians are through Longueville most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Woolwich Baths Beach, Lane Cove Country Club or Wharf Road Reserve, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Longueville for us.
We work under the North Sydney, Mosman, Willoughby, Lane Cove and Hunters Hill area here, and Riverview, Woolwich and Linley Point are all on the same route, which matters when cockroach problems are moving between adjoining properties. Period homes near the harbour tend to have sub-floors, original timber and gardens running down to the boundary, so the inspection covers well beyond the kitchen.
Longueville jobs tend to be older homes near the water with a sub-floor that never fully dries. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Every part of 2066 is covered as standard.
The 2066 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Riverview and Woolwich fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
Worth knowing before you blame yourself: this species is almost always introduced. Flatten cardboard rather than storing it, and check any used appliance before it comes inside.
A large German cockroach population has a distinct musty, oily smell that gets into cupboards, drawer liners and anything cardboard. It comes from their droppings and secretions, and it lingers until the harbourage itself is cleaned out.
If you are seeing them with the lights on, the numbers behind the kickboard are substantial. We treat a daytime report in Longueville as an established infestation rather than a few strays.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

The small indoor one - about 12 to 15 mm, light brown, with a pair of dark bands just behind the head. It stays close to warmth and water, which is why kitchens and bathrooms are where it establishes.

Up to roughly 4 cm long and reddish-brown. You find it in sewers, pits, grease traps and under the floor, and it travels up through drains after dark rather than nesting indoors.

About the same size as the American, distinguished by pale yellow margins behind the head and along the wing edges. It is an outdoor cockroach - mulch, garden beds and subfloors - that wanders inside.

Small, with light bands across the back. Unlike the others it avoids damp, preferring warm dry places up high - behind wall hangings, inside appliance housings and in upper cupboards.

One of our Sydney inspections, showing German cockroach activity. The harbourage itself tells the story: droppings, cast skins and egg cases give us both the species and the scale.

Taken on an Elite commercial job - harbourage inside the equipment itself. Motor cavities, door seals and hollow legs stay warm all night and rarely see a cloth.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches in the kitchen during the day, plus pepper-like droppings in cupboard corners | German cockroach, usually a heavy infestation | Hinges, dishwasher and fridge cavities, behind the kickboards, inside appliances | Gel bait rotation, growth regulator and crack-and-crevice treatment inside |
| The occasional large cockroach at night in a wet area rather than a group in the kitchen | American cockroach | Pits, the subfloor, and floor wastes that are no longer holding water | Drain and pit treatment plus subfloor work, with pipe gaps sealed afterwards |
| Big yellow-margined cockroaches that seem to come from the garden rather than the kitchen | Australian cockroach | Garden mulch, leaf litter and woodpiles, plus the roof cavity | Treating outside: the perimeter, the roof void, and the harbourage in the beds themselves |
| Small cockroaches behind frames and in the TV cabinet, nowhere near a tap | Brown-banded cockroach | Warm dry furniture, and electrical appliances that run warm | Baiting concentrated in the rooms you live and sleep in |
| Cockroaches returning to a unit however often you treat your own kitchen | German cockroach crossing between units | Common service risers, bin rooms, and the wall cavities that link lots | Treatment coordinated building-wide. See strata pest control |

Each German cockroach egg case carries roughly 30 eggs and stays with the female almost until they hatch. Surface sprays never reach it, so the following generation arrives regardless.
Multiply several egg cases per female by nymphs that mature in a few warm weeks and you have the reason a minor sighting turns into an infestation.
Bombs and supermarket sprays push cockroaches deeper into wall voids and into the unit next door, and can contaminate the surfaces you prepare food on.
Cast skins, droppings and saliva are recognised asthma and allergy triggers, which makes a long-running infestation a health issue rather than just an annoyance.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
First we establish which cockroach it is, then map where it lives - torch and mirror into hinges, motor cavities, behind kickboards and into wall voids. Everything after this depends on that map.
If grease or food residue is sustaining the population, we point out exactly what to clean and in what order. Bait competes with whatever else is available, so this step changes the result.
Professional gel goes down as small dots inside the cracks they already use. A cockroach feeds, goes home, and the product moves through the rest of the colony from there.
An insect growth regulator stops nymphs becoming breeding adults, and dust goes into wall voids and cavities where gel cannot reach.
American and Australian cockroaches are treated at source: pits, floor wastes, subfloor and roof void. Treating the kitchen alone just handles the ones that already made it in.
We leave you a written record of the job. If it is still heavy at two weeks, or comes back inside the 6 months a general treatment carries, we return at no charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Takes care of the one in front of you | Does nothing to egg cases or voids, and drives the rest deeper into the walls |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Covers a whole room's open surfaces at once | Harbourage is untouched, benches end up with residue, and the population spreads out |
| Retail bait stations | Can help if you have only seen a few | The bait volume is small, and competing food such as grease wins out |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Taken back into the harbourage and passed on; we can change formulation if they go off one | Wants a clean kitchen behind it, and takes days to a fortnight rather than minutes |
| Insect growth regulator | Blocks nymphs from maturing into breeders and shuts the egg-case cycle down | Takes time to show, so it is always applied together with bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.

Activity should fall steadily. Leave bait spots in hinges and cracks alone, and avoid spraying your own insecticide over them, which can make cockroaches refuse the bait.
Keep the agent or building manager informed if it does not settle; cockroaches travel between flats. Our apartment pest control page covers the options for a whole block.
Steady activity at the two-week mark, or a return inside 6 months of a general treatment, means a warranty re-treatment - ring 1300 313 373.
Council officers want records, not reassurance. For food premises around Longueville we provide the treatment schedule, the products used, the monitoring point locations and the findings from each visit, in a form you can hand over.
From Woolwich Baths Beach through to the Riverview side of Longueville, it is all one service area for us - same price, same response time.
In older Longueville buildings a cockroach population can live entirely in the drain line and come up at night. Treating the kitchen and ignoring the pipework means you are treating the visitors, not the residents.
The species sets the method - gel and growth regulator indoors for German cockroaches, pits and subfloor for the drain dwellers.
Bait placed in cracks and hinges, not a blanket spray over food preparation surfaces.
One flat or a whole commercial kitchen - food premises are done outside trading hours.
Six months on a general treatment - if they come back inside it, so do we, at no charge.
