Days 1 to 3
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.

If you are in Rookwood or anywhere else in 2141, you are in our Greater Parramatta & Cumberland patch, 14.2 km west of the CBD. We run Rookwood on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Flemington station and Hudson District Park (West) in Rookwood, and Hudson District Park (East) is close enough to be on the same run.
We work under the City of Parramatta and Cumberland area here, and Lidcombe, Strathfield and Chullora are all on the same route, which matters when cockroach problems are moving between adjoining properties. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
The bulk of our Rookwood work is older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Our Rookwood runs also take in Lidcombe Shopping Centre and the area near Sydney Markets Plaza, so the whole postcode is served.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Lidcombe and Strathfield are covered on the same round, 2141 often has an earlier slot available.
The population is not on your bench. It is in the warm, dark, humid gaps - behind the kickboard, inside the dishwasher housing, under the fridge motor, in the hinge of a cupboard door. A Rookwood treatment that only covers surfaces has not touched the nest.
Two very different problems get called the same thing. Indoors and small means German cockroach and a resident population. Large and occasional means an outdoor species that walked in - and in Rookwood that usually traces back to a drain, a vent or a gap under a door.
In older Rookwood buildings a cockroach population can live entirely in the drain line and come up at night. Treating the kitchen and ignoring the pipework means you are treating the visitors, not the residents.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

The small indoor one - about 12 to 15 mm, light brown, with a pair of dark bands just behind the head. It stays close to warmth and water, which is why kitchens and bathrooms are where it establishes.

Up to roughly 4 cm long and reddish-brown. You find it in sewers, pits, grease traps and under the floor, and it travels up through drains after dark rather than nesting indoors.

Similar in size to the American cockroach, told apart by the yellow margins at the head and wing edges. An outdoor species - gardens, mulch, the subfloor - that makes its way in.

A small species with pale bands across the body that prefers warm, dry spots higher up, such as behind picture frames, in electrical housings and inside cupboards away from water.

An Elite job photo of German cockroach activity on a Sydney inspection. Egg cases, shed skins and droppings in the harbourage are how we work out what we are dealing with.

From a commercial kitchen we service: cockroach harbourage inside the machinery. Hollow legs, door seals and motor housings keep their heat overnight and are almost never cleaned.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches in the kitchen during the day, plus pepper-like droppings in cupboard corners | German cockroach, usually a heavy infestation | Hinges, dishwasher and fridge cavities, behind the kickboards, inside appliances | Gel bait rotation, growth regulator and crack-and-crevice treatment inside |
| Large cockroaches turning up at night around wet areas, usually one at a time | American cockroach | The pit system, the subfloor, and any floor-waste trap that has lost its water seal | Pit and drain work, subfloor treatment, and closing off pipe penetrations |
| Yellow-edged cockroaches in the garage, or coming through a door from the garden | Australian cockroach | Mulch and leaf litter, woodpiles, and the roof void | External perimeter, a dusting through the roof void, and clearing garden harbourage |
| Small cockroaches in bedrooms, in the TV unit or behind frames, away from the kitchen | Brown-banded cockroach | Warm, dry furniture and electrical appliances | Targeted baiting in living and sleeping areas |
| A flat that clears for a fortnight and then has cockroaches again | German cockroach moving through the building | Shared risers, the bin room, and cavities running between walls | A coordinated treatment across the block. See strata pest control |

A German cockroach egg case holds about 30 eggs and travels with the female until hatching is close. Kill the adults you can see and the next generation still arrives.
Multiply several egg cases per female by nymphs that mature in a few warm weeks and you have the reason a minor sighting turns into an infestation.
Because they repel, bombs and aerosols spread the problem: deeper into the walls, into the neighbouring unit, and over the surfaces you prepare food on.
Droppings, saliva and shed skins are established asthma and allergy triggers. An infestation left in place is a health problem, not only an unpleasant one.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
Step one is knowing which cockroach you have. Step two is finding where it shelters: torch and inspection mirror through hinges, appliance cavities, kickboards and wall voids.
Where grease or food build-up is feeding the colony, we show you what to clean first. Bait works far better when it is the most attractive food in the room.
Rather than spray, we put small amounts of gel exactly where they travel. They eat and return to shelter, and that is how the treatment reaches the ones you never see.
A growth regulator prevents the young reaching breeding age, while dust treats the wall voids and cavities that gel placement cannot get into.
For American and Australian cockroaches we treat pits, floor wastes, the subfloor and roof void, because those species live outside the kitchen and travel in.
You get a written summary. If activity is still heavy after two weeks or returns within 6 months of a general treatment, we come back at no charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Kills the cockroach you can see | Does not reach egg cases or voids, and repels others deeper into walls |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Gets product onto every open surface at once | Harbourage is missed, benches end up with residue, and the colony splits up |
| Retail bait stations | Has a place when you have only seen one or two | Very little bait in each, and any crumbs or grease will out-compete it |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Eaten in the hiding place and passed between cockroaches; formulations rotate if one is avoided | Depends on a clean kitchen, and the result comes over days to a fortnight |
| Insect growth regulator | Prevents the young reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Slow by design, so we never use it on its own - it goes in with bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.
Expect activity to taper off. The bait dots in hinges and cracks need to stay put, and nothing should be sprayed over them - that is what makes cockroaches avoid bait.
If it keeps going, let the agent or building manager know - cockroaches move between units readily. There is more on co-ordinated work on our apartment pest control page.
Two weeks on and still seeing them regularly, or back inside 6 months of a general treatment? That is a warranty call - 1300 313 373.
A good share of our Rookwood work sits close to Lidcombe Shopping Centre, though the back streets and the Lidcombe boundary are just as familiar.
For a Rookwood cafe or restaurant the standard is different: a documented program, a site plan with numbered monitoring points, and a report an auditor will accept. We work to that rather than turning up with a spray pack.
If your Rookwood neighbour has cockroaches, you have a supply line. The treatment still works, but it needs the entry points sealed and ideally the adjoining property done at the same time.
The species sets the method - gel and growth regulator indoors for German cockroaches, pits and subfloor for the drain dwellers.
Gel goes into the cracks and hinges. Nothing gets sprayed across the bench you prepare food on.
From single apartments to commercial kitchens serviced outside trading hours.
A general treatment is covered for 6 months. Cockroaches inside that period mean a free return visit.

Get a Free QuoteA cockroach treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in Rookwood. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Rookwood is about 14.2 km west of the CBD in the Greater Parramatta & Cumberland, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
Joined housing is the reason. Where walls, roof voids and sub-floors are continuous between properties, cockroaches are a street-level problem rather than a house-level one.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.
