Expect more sightings, not fewer - slow-moving cockroaches out in the open or dead on the floor. That is the bait and growth regulator taking effect. Sweep them up.

Where Russell Lea sits, who covers it and what it costs.
If you are in Russell Lea or anywhere else in 2046, you are in our Inner West patch, 6.3 km west of the CBD. Our technicians are through Russell Lea most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Our Russell Lea work takes in the streets by Parramatta River Regional Park and Birkenhead Point Outlet Centre, through to Larkins Reserve at the other end.
Under Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay, we cover Russell Lea and Rodd Point, Wareemba and Chiswick alike. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
What we see in Russell Lea is older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre and the remainder of 2046 are on the same run.
Bookings for 2046 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at Rodd Point and Wareemba often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.
They do not bite. What they do is walk through a drain and then over the surface you cut food on, which is a contamination problem - and the reason we treat the pipework and the harbourage, not just the floor.
Cockroach numbers do not climb steadily, they jump. A single egg case hatching behind a Russell Lea dishwasher puts forty juveniles into the room at once, and those reach breeding age in about ten weeks. Treating only what is visible resets nothing.
German cockroaches are small, light brown, and stay indoors near warmth and water. Australian and smoky-brown cockroaches are bigger, darker and come in from outside. In Russell Lea we see both, and they need completely different treatments - one is a kitchen job, the other is a perimeter job.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Around 12 to 15 mm, light brown, two dark stripes running back from the head. It never really leaves the building - warmth, a food source and a little moisture keep it going, and it out-breeds every other cockroach in a kitchen.

The big reddish-brown one, reaching around 4 cm. Its home is the drain line, the grease trap, the stormwater pit or the subfloor - it visits the kitchen, it does not live there.

Similar in size to the American cockroach, told apart by the yellow margins at the head and wing edges. An outdoor species - gardens, mulch, the subfloor - that makes its way in.

Small, with light bands across the back. Unlike the others it avoids damp, preferring warm dry places up high - behind wall hangings, inside appliance housings and in upper cupboards.

An Elite job photo of German cockroach activity on a Sydney inspection. Egg cases, shed skins and droppings in the harbourage are how we work out what we are dealing with.

Taken on an Elite commercial job - harbourage inside the equipment itself. Motor cavities, door seals and hollow legs stay warm all night and rarely see a cloth.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches in the kitchen during the day, plus pepper-like droppings in cupboard corners | German cockroach, usually a heavy infestation | Hinges, dishwasher and fridge cavities, behind the kickboards, inside appliances | Gel bait rotation, growth regulator and crack-and-crevice treatment inside |
| Big cockroaches seen after dark near a floor waste, the bathroom or the laundry | American cockroach | Sewer and stormwater pits and the subfloor - plus dried-out waste traps as the way in | We treat the pits, the drain lines and the subfloor, then seal around the pipework |
| Big yellow-margined cockroaches that seem to come from the garden rather than the kitchen | Australian cockroach | Garden mulch, leaf litter and woodpiles, plus the roof cavity | Treating outside: the perimeter, the roof void, and the harbourage in the beds themselves |
| Little banded cockroaches behind a picture frame or inside the TV unit, away from any water | Brown-banded cockroach | Dry warm spots in furniture and inside electrical gear | Targeted baiting in the rooms you live and sleep in, not the kitchen |
| A unit where the problem never quite ends, weeks after a DIY attempt | German cockroach spreading from a neighbouring lot | Shared risers and bin rooms, plus the cavities inside shared walls | A building-wide, coordinated treatment. See strata pest control |

A German cockroach egg case holds around 30 eggs, and the female carries it until shortly before hatching. Killing adults on the surface leaves the next generation untouched.
Multiply several egg cases per female by nymphs that mature in a few warm weeks and you have the reason a minor sighting turns into an infestation.
A repellent product scatters rather than clears - deeper into the wall void, through to the unit next door - and leaves residue where food is prepared.
Droppings, saliva and shed skins are established asthma and allergy triggers. An infestation left in place is a health problem, not only an unpleasant one.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
We identify the species, then go looking with a torch and mirror - hinges, inside appliances, behind the kickboards, into the wall voids. What we find decides the treatment, not a set routine.
Where grease or food build-up is feeding the colony, we show you what to clean first. Bait works far better when it is the most attractive food in the room.
Small dots of professional gel bait go into the cracks cockroaches travel through. They eat, return to harbourage and the effect passes through the population.
An insect growth regulator stops nymphs becoming breeding adults, and dust goes into wall voids and cavities where gel cannot reach.
American and Australian cockroaches are treated at source: pits, floor wastes, subfloor and roof void. Treating the kitchen alone just handles the ones that already made it in.
We leave you a written record of the job. If it is still heavy at two weeks, or comes back inside the 6 months a general treatment carries, we return at no charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Quick on a cockroach you can actually reach | No effect on egg cases or harbourage, and it pushes the others deeper into cavities |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Covers open surfaces in a room | Misses harbourage, leaves residue on benches, and can scatter the colony |
| Retail bait stations | Useful for a light problem | Low bait volume, and easily out-competed by crumbs and grease |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Fed on inside the harbourage and shared through the colony, with the option to swap formulations | Only works with the food competition removed, and needs days to two weeks |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops the young ever reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Acts slowly by design, so bait always goes in with it |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.

Through the second week activity should fall away. Leave the bait in place in hinges and cracks, and resist spraying anything over it, which puts cockroaches off feeding.
Keep the agent or building manager informed if it does not settle; cockroaches travel between flats. Our apartment pest control page covers the options for a whole block.

The pattern we see across Russell Lea and the wider Inner West is a surge after the first properly warm week, then steady pressure until autumn. Treating before that surge is far cheaper than treating after it.
A cockroach sighting in a Russell Lea food business is a compliance problem before it is a pest problem. The program we run is built so the paperwork exists before anyone asks for it.
In older Russell Lea buildings a cockroach population can live entirely in the drain line and come up at night. Treating the kitchen and ignoring the pipework means you are treating the visitors, not the residents.
German cockroaches get baits and growth regulators, and drain species get pit and subfloor work. The species decides the treatment.
Precise gel placement into cracks and hinges rather than spraying the surfaces you cook on.
Single units through to commercial kitchens, with food premises worked outside trading hours.
General treatments carry 6 months: a return within that window brings us back at no cost.
