Days 1 to 3
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.

What we cover in St Marys, and how quickly we can get there.
Postcode 2760 covers St Marys and the streets immediately around it. At about 41.7 km west of the CBD it falls in the Penrith & the Outer West, where we have vans out daily. We travel out to St Marys on planned runs through the Penrith & the Outer West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
The St Marys addresses we attend cluster around Victoria Park and Wilson Oval. St Marys Village is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
Penrith City and Hawkesbury is the council area for St Marys, and we treat Oxley Park, Claremont Meadows and Colyton on the same schedule. On larger blocks the outbuildings, sheds and woodpiles are usually where the problem is sitting, so they are part of the inspection.
St Marys jobs tend to be acreage properties with outbuildings that need checking alongside the house. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Our St Marys runs also take in Colonial Golf Course and the area near St Marys station, so the whole postcode is served.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2760 run the day before, and if Oxley Park or Claremont Meadows is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Heat is an accelerator. Through a St Marys summer the cycle from egg case to breeding adult runs weeks faster than it does in July, which is why a small problem noticed in spring is worth dealing with before Christmas.
People assume it is about crumbs. It is mostly about moisture. The leaking waste under a St Marys sink, condensation behind the fridge or a shower recess that never dries will hold a population on its own.
Nobody gets bitten by a cockroach. The risk is what comes off their feet onto a St Marys benchtop after a trip through the drain line, which matters most in a house with small children or anyone with a weakened immune system.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

At 12 to 15 mm and light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, this is the species we find living permanently indoors. Warmth, food and moisture are all it needs, and it reproduces faster than any other cockroach here.

Up to roughly 4 cm long and reddish-brown. You find it in sewers, pits, grease traps and under the floor, and it travels up through drains after dark rather than nesting indoors.

Close to the American cockroach in size, with yellow edging near the head and down the wings. It belongs outdoors in gardens, mulch and subfloor areas, and enters the house rather than breeding in it.

A small species with pale bands across the body that prefers warm, dry spots higher up, such as behind picture frames, in electrical housings and inside cupboards away from water.

An Elite inspection photo showing German cockroach activity in Sydney. What we look for is the evidence - droppings, cast skins, egg cases - because it identifies the species and how long it has been there.

An Elite photo of cockroaches living inside commercial equipment. Warm motor cavities, perished door seals and hollow legs are the three places we open first on a kitchen job.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches in the kitchen during the day, plus pepper-like droppings in cupboard corners | German cockroach, usually a heavy infestation | Hinges, dishwasher and fridge cavities, behind the kickboards, inside appliances | Gel bait rotation, growth regulator and crack-and-crevice treatment inside |
| Big cockroaches at night in the wet areas, never a crowd of them in the kitchen | American cockroach | Down in the pits and the subfloor, coming up through floor wastes with no water in them | We treat the pits and drain lines and the subfloor, then seal where the pipes come through |
| Big yellow-margined cockroaches that seem to come from the garden rather than the kitchen | Australian cockroach | Garden mulch, leaf litter and woodpiles, plus the roof cavity | Treating outside: the perimeter, the roof void, and the harbourage in the beds themselves |
| Small cockroaches found upstairs or in bedrooms rather than around the sink | Brown-banded cockroach | Dry, warm furniture and the inside of electrical appliances | Targeted bait placement through living and sleeping spaces |
| An apartment where they come back a few weeks after you treated it yourself | German cockroach travelling between lots | The service risers, the bin room and the wall cavities the units share | Treating the building as one job. See strata pest control |

Each German cockroach egg case carries roughly 30 eggs and stays with the female almost until they hatch. Surface sprays never reach it, so the following generation arrives regardless.
Several egg cases per female, and nymphs maturing in weeks where it is warm - the arithmetic is why cockroach numbers climb so steeply once they are established.
A repellent product scatters rather than clears - deeper into the wall void, through to the unit next door - and leaves residue where food is prepared.
The allergen load - droppings, saliva, cast skins - is a recognised trigger for asthma and allergies, which is why clearing an infestation properly matters beyond the nuisance.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
Step one is knowing which cockroach you have. Step two is finding where it shelters: torch and inspection mirror through hinges, appliance cavities, kickboards and wall voids.
Where build-up is feeding them, you will get a short list of what to clean and the order to do it in - bait has to out-compete everything else available.
Small dots of professional gel bait go into the cracks cockroaches travel through. They eat, return to harbourage and the effect passes through the population.
The growth regulator keeps nymphs from ever breeding; dust handles the wall voids and cavities that no gel dot can reach.
American and Australian cockroaches are treated at source: pits, floor wastes, subfloor and roof void. Treating the kitchen alone just handles the ones that already made it in.
Everything is recorded in writing. Still seeing heavy activity after a fortnight, or it returns inside the 6-month warranty on a general treatment? We return at no cost.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Quick on a cockroach you can actually reach | No effect on egg cases or harbourage, and it pushes the others deeper into cavities |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Gets product onto every open surface at once | Harbourage is missed, benches end up with residue, and the colony splits up |
| Retail bait stations | Reasonable for a minor, early problem | Too little bait to clear a colony, and easily out-competed by crumbs and grease |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Taken back into the harbourage and passed on; we can change formulation if they go off one | Wants a clean kitchen behind it, and takes days to a fortnight rather than minutes |
| Insect growth regulator | Prevents the young reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Slow by design, so we never use it on its own - it goes in with bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
The first few days usually look worse: cockroaches in the open, slow, or dead on the floor. It means the treatment has started. Just sweep them away.
Activity should fall steadily. Leave bait spots in hinges and cracks alone, and avoid spraying your own insecticide over them, which can make cockroaches refuse the bait.
If it keeps going, let the agent or building manager know - cockroaches move between units readily. There is more on co-ordinated work on our apartment pest control page.
Steady activity at the two-week mark, or a return inside 6 months of a general treatment, means a warranty re-treatment - ring 1300 313 373.
For a St Marys cafe or restaurant the standard is different: a documented program, a site plan with numbered monitoring points, and a report an auditor will accept. We work to that rather than turning up with a spray pack.
From St Marys Village through to the Oxley Park side of St Marys, it is all one service area for us - same price, same response time.
Humidity is the driver. In the Penrith & the Outer West the summer months bring the fastest breeding, and the mild winters mean a population indoors never really slows - it just gets quieter.
Identify first, then treat: bait and growth regulator for German cockroaches, pit and subfloor work for the species that come up the drains.
Gel goes into the cracks and hinges. Nothing gets sprayed across the bench you prepare food on.
We cover everything from one apartment to a full commercial kitchen, scheduled around your trading hours.
If cockroaches return inside 6 months of a general treatment, we come back free of charge.

There is simply more harbourage on a block this size. Sheds, stacked timber, feed stores and open ground all hold cockroaches populations long before the house is involved.
Rural-residential blocks where the shed, feed store or woodpile is as likely to be the source as the building itself.
