Where Summer Hill sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our Inner West technicians cover Summer Hill and the rest of 2130 as a matter of course - it is only about 7.2 km west of the city. Our technicians are through Summer Hill most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
A lot of our Summer Hill jobs are in the streets around Summer Hill station and Daryl Jackson Gardens, and we are out near Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
The suburb sits in the Inner West, Burwood, Strathfield and Canada Bay area. Lewisham, Ashfield and Dulwich Hill are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
Most Summer Hill bookings come in as older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
The rest of 2130 is covered too, including the pockets around Graham Reserve and MarketPlace Leichhardt.
Bookings for 2130 are confirmed the day before with a set arrival time, not an all-day window. Jobs at Lewisham and Ashfield often share the same run, which is how earlier slots come up.
Almost none of the colony is out where you can see it. They are packed into the warm humid gaps - the kickboard void, the dishwasher housing, under the fridge motor, inside a cupboard hinge - so a Summer Hill job that treats surfaces has missed the point.
The odour is a useful diagnostic. We can often tell from it how long a Summer Hill problem has been running, and it is also why treatment includes advice on what to clean or discard afterwards.
In older Summer Hill buildings a cockroach population can live entirely in the drain line and come up at night. Treating the kitchen and ignoring the pipework means you are treating the visitors, not the residents.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Around 12 to 15 mm, light brown, two dark stripes running back from the head. It never really leaves the building - warmth, a food source and a little moisture keep it going, and it out-breeds every other cockroach in a kitchen.

The largest one we deal with, around 4 cm and reddish-brown. Pits, sewers, grease traps and subfloors are where it breeds; the kitchen is somewhere it passes through at night.

As big as the American but marked with pale yellow along the edge of the wings and behind the head. The name misleads: this one lives outside in mulch and garden beds and only comes indoors to look about.

A small banded cockroach that favours warmth and dryness rather than moisture. Look for it high up: behind frames, inside electrical enclosures and in cupboards well away from the sink.

Photo from an Elite job: German cockroach activity found during a Sydney inspection. Droppings, cast skins and egg cases in the harbourage tell us the species and how established it is.

An Elite photo of cockroaches living inside commercial equipment. Warm motor cavities, perished door seals and hollow legs are the three places we open first on a kitchen job.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches you can see without a torch, plus droppings like coarse pepper on cupboard edges | German cockroach - daytime sightings mean a lot of them | Hinges, the cavity behind the fridge, under the kickboards, in the housings of the appliances | Gel bait rotated through the job, a growth regulator, and crack-and-crevice work indoors |
| Large cockroaches turning up at night around wet areas, usually one at a time | American cockroach | The pit system, the subfloor, and any floor-waste trap that has lost its water seal | Pit and drain work, subfloor treatment, and closing off pipe penetrations |
| Large cockroaches edged in pale yellow, around the garage or just inside a back door | Australian cockroach | Mulch and leaf litter, woodpiles, and up in the roof void | Perimeter work outside, a dusting of the roof void, and clearing the garden harbourage |
| Small cockroaches turning up in bedrooms and living rooms, never around the sink | Brown-banded cockroach | Warm dry furniture, and the inside of electrical appliances | Bait placed through the living and sleeping areas where they actually are |
| Cockroaches that always come back to the flat no matter how well you treat your own kitchen | German cockroach moving around the block | Shared service risers, the bin room, and cavities inside the party walls | Treating the whole building together. See strata pest control |

A licensed Sydney technician will talk it through with you and give you a fixed quote within half an hour.
A German cockroach egg case holds about 30 eggs and travels with the female until hatching is close. Kill the adults you can see and the next generation still arrives.
Multiply several egg cases per female by nymphs that mature in a few warm weeks and you have the reason a minor sighting turns into an infestation.
A repellent product scatters rather than clears - deeper into the wall void, through to the unit next door - and leaves residue where food is prepared.
Cockroach droppings, saliva and cast skins are recognised triggers for allergies and asthma, so a lingering infestation is a health issue as well as a nuisance.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
Species confirmation comes first, then the search. Torch and inspection mirror into cupboard hinges, appliance housings, the kickboard void and the wall cavity, so the treatment is aimed rather than general.
We identify the build-up that is feeding them and tell you what to deal with first. The less competing food there is, the harder the bait works.
Dots of professional gel are placed in the cracks they run through. One feeds, carries it back to the harbourage, and it works through the colony from the inside.
A growth regulator shuts down the next generation, and dust goes into the voids and cavities where gel simply cannot be placed.
Pits, floor wastes, the subfloor and the roof void get treated for the American and Australian species - they come in from there, so that is where it has to be done.
You receive a written summary of what was found and done. Heavy activity after two weeks, or a return within the 6-month general-treatment warranty, brings us back free of charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Kills on contact, so the visible one goes | Cannot reach an egg case or a void, and repels the remainder into the walls |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Treats the exposed surfaces of a room in one go | Nothing reaches the hiding places, residue settles on food surfaces, and the colony scatters |
| Retail bait stations | Worth using when numbers are genuinely low | There is very little bait in them, and crumbs or grease will beat them every time |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Taken into the harbourage and shared around; if they tire of one gel we change it | Needs the kitchen clean behind it, and works over days rather than hours |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops the young ever reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Acts slowly by design, so bait always goes in with it |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
Seeing more of them at first is expected. They come out, move slowly and die - the bait and growth regulator doing their job. Sweep up and leave everything else alone.
Numbers should drop away through this period. Do not wipe the bait out of hinges and cracks, and do not spray over it - cockroaches will stop taking bait that has been sprayed.
If it keeps going, let the agent or building manager know - cockroaches move between units readily. There is more on co-ordinated work on our apartment pest control page.
Two weeks on and still seeing them regularly, or back inside 6 months of a general treatment? That is a warranty call - 1300 313 373.
Humidity is the driver. In the Inner West the summer months bring the fastest breeding, and the mild winters mean a population indoors never really slows - it just gets quieter.
Where Summer Hill housing shares walls and roof voids - semis, terraces, unit blocks - the population is usually shared too. We say so up front rather than treating one flat and letting you discover it a month later.
From Graham Reserve through to the Lewisham side of Summer Hill, it is all one service area for us - same price, same response time.
What we use depends on what you have: baits and growth regulators for German cockroaches, pit and subfloor treatment for the drain species.
Precise gel placement into cracks and hinges rather than spraying the surfaces you cook on.
Apartments through to commercial kitchens, with food businesses serviced when they are closed.
If cockroaches return inside 6 months of a general treatment, we come back free of charge.

Same-day attendance is usually available. Our Inner West technicians cover Summer Hill daily, and you get a confirmed arrival time when you book.
Joined housing is the reason. Where walls, roof voids and sub-floors are continuous between properties, cockroaches are a street-level problem rather than a house-level one.
Older joined housing. The treatment takes account of shared walls, continuous sub-floors and roof voids that run between properties.
We do all of those. A good share of the Summer Hill jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
Yes, when it is applied properly. We use registered products at label rates and tell you which areas to keep clear and for how long. Mention pets, fish tanks or allergies when you book.
