You may see cockroaches out in daylight, moving slowly or dying on the floor. This is the bait and growth regulator starting to work. Sweep them up and keep going.

Where Westleigh sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Westleigh is part of the Ryde & the Northern District, 20.7 km or so north-west of the GPO, and 2120 is a postcode we know well. We run Westleigh on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
A lot of our Westleigh jobs are in the streets around Oakleigh Park and Headen Park, and we are out near Westleigh Shopping Village regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
Thornleigh, Pennant Hills and Normanhurst are all on the same route as Westleigh. The building stock is close-packed, so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
The cockroach calls we take from Westleigh are mostly apartments and converted blocks where the kitchen backs onto a service riser. If yours is one of them, mention it when you ring 1300 313 373 - it changes what the technician brings.
Thornleigh Marketplace and Thornleigh station are on the same round, which means every part of 2120 is within our area.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Thornleigh and Pennant Hills are covered on the same round, 2120 often has an earlier slot available.
Where Westleigh housing shares walls and roof voids - semis, terraces, unit blocks - the population is usually shared too. We say so up front rather than treating one flat and letting you discover it a month later.
The usual route into a Westleigh home is carried, not crawled. Appliance deliveries, recycled cartons and second-hand white goods are the three we trace most often.
Heat is an accelerator. Through a Westleigh summer the cycle from egg case to breeding adult runs weeks faster than it does in July, which is why a small problem noticed in spring is worth dealing with before Christmas.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, roughly 12 to 15 mm long. It lives indoors near warmth, food and moisture, and it is the species that breeds fastest inside a kitchen.

The largest one we deal with, around 4 cm and reddish-brown. Pits, sewers, grease traps and subfloors are where it breeds; the kitchen is somewhere it passes through at night.

Close to the American cockroach in size, with yellow edging near the head and down the wings. It belongs outdoors in gardens, mulch and subfloor areas, and enters the house rather than breeding in it.

Small, with light bands across the back. Unlike the others it avoids damp, preferring warm dry places up high - behind wall hangings, inside appliance housings and in upper cupboards.

Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cockroaches barely 15 mm out in the open by day, with dark pepper-like specks where cupboards meet | German cockroach, and an established one | Inside hinges, appliance cavities, the kickboard void, the housings of the appliances themselves | Gel baits rotated through the job, a growth regulator, and crack-and-crevice application indoors |
| A large cockroach or two after dark, always near a drain, the laundry or the bathroom | American cockroach | The sewer and stormwater pits, the subfloor, and floor-waste traps that have dried out | Pit and drain treatment, the subfloor, and sealing the gaps around pipe penetrations |
| Yellow-edged cockroaches in the garage, or coming through a door from the garden | Australian cockroach | Mulch and leaf litter, woodpiles, and the roof void | External perimeter, a dusting through the roof void, and clearing garden harbourage |
| Little banded cockroaches behind a picture frame or inside the TV unit, away from any water | Brown-banded cockroach | Dry warm spots in furniture and inside electrical gear | Targeted baiting in the rooms you live and sleep in, not the kitchen |
| A flat that clears for a fortnight and then has cockroaches again | German cockroach moving through the building | Shared risers, the bin room, and cavities running between walls | A coordinated treatment across the block. See strata pest control |

The egg case - around 30 eggs, carried by the female until just before hatching - is shielded from anything applied to a surface. That is why the population reappears after a DIY attempt.
Several egg cases per female, and nymphs maturing in weeks where it is warm - the arithmetic is why cockroach numbers climb so steeply once they are established.
Supermarket sprays and bombs repel. The colony moves further into the cavity, or next door, and your benchtops end up with residue on them.
What they leave behind matters: droppings, saliva and cast skins are known asthma and allergy triggers, so this is a health question as much as a comfort one.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
First we establish which cockroach it is, then map where it lives - torch and mirror into hinges, motor cavities, behind kickboards and into wall voids. Everything after this depends on that map.
Grease and food residue keep a colony going, so we show you the spots that matter most. Bait only wins if it is the best meal in the room.
Rather than spray, we put small amounts of gel exactly where they travel. They eat and return to shelter, and that is how the treatment reaches the ones you never see.
A growth regulator prevents the young reaching breeding age, while dust treats the wall voids and cavities that gel placement cannot get into.
With American and Australian cockroaches the work is outside the kitchen: the pits, the floor wastes, the subfloor and the roof void, because that is where they breed.
A written summary comes with the job. Heavy activity still there after two weeks, or a return within 6 months of a general treatment, and we come back for nothing.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Quick on a cockroach you can actually reach | No effect on egg cases or harbourage, and it pushes the others deeper into cavities |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Covers a whole room's open surfaces at once | Harbourage is untouched, benches end up with residue, and the population spreads out |
| Retail bait stations | Has a place when you have only seen one or two | Very little bait in each, and any crumbs or grease will out-compete it |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Taken back into the harbourage and passed on; we can change formulation if they go off one | Wants a clean kitchen behind it, and takes days to a fortnight rather than minutes |
| Insect growth regulator | Prevents nymphs maturing, so the cycle of egg cases stops | Slow on its own, which is why it is never used without bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
You may see cockroaches out in daylight, moving slowly or dying on the floor. This is the bait and growth regulator starting to work. Sweep them up and keep going.
Through the second week activity should fall away. Leave the bait in place in hinges and cracks, and resist spraying anything over it, which puts cockroaches off feeding.
Tell your agent or building manager if activity continues, as cockroaches often travel between lots. Our apartment pest control page explains building-wide options.
Call 1300 313 373 if activity is still steady after a fortnight, or if they come back within the 6 months a general treatment covers. The re-treatment is under warranty.
In older Westleigh buildings a cockroach population can live entirely in the drain line and come up at night. Treating the kitchen and ignoring the pipework means you are treating the visitors, not the residents.
From Westleigh Shopping Village through to the Thornleigh side of Westleigh, it is all one service area for us - same price, same response time.
For a Westleigh cafe or restaurant the standard is different: a documented program, a site plan with numbered monitoring points, and a report an auditor will accept. We work to that rather than turning up with a spray pack.
German cockroaches get baits and growth regulators, and drain species get pit and subfloor work. The species decides the treatment.
Gel goes into the cracks and hinges. Nothing gets sprayed across the bench you prepare food on.
We cover everything from one apartment to a full commercial kitchen, scheduled around your trading hours.
Six months on a general treatment - if they come back inside it, so do we, at no charge.

Get a Free QuoteA cockroach treatment starts from $89. Two things move it: how big the place is, and how far it has already spread. We work that out on the phone or on site and tell you the figure before anything starts in Westleigh. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Westleigh is about 20.7 km north-west of the CBD in the Ryde & the Northern District, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
These houses were built joined together, and they have aged that way. Party walls, continuous roof voids and shared drainage give cockroaches a route your front door has no bearing on.
Joined housing with ageing drainage. That combination decides where product goes far more than the floor plan does.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Westleigh 2120, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
Yes, with the usual care. Everything is APVMA-registered and used to label, and we will work around pets, aquariums and anyone in the house with a respiratory condition if you tell us when you book.
In the great majority of jobs, no. If one area needs to be left for an hour or two we say so before we start rather than after.
Typically one to two hours on site. What extends it is size, access and how far the problem has gone, all of which are accounted for in the quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
We cover the whole of Westleigh, from the streets around Westleigh Shopping Village out to the suburb boundary and on into Thornleigh.
