Seeing more of them at first is expected. They come out, move slowly and die - the bait and growth regulator doing their job. Sweep up and leave everything else alone.

If you are in Yarrawarrah or anywhere else in 2233, you are in our Sutherland Shire patch, 26.4 km south-west of the CBD. We cover Yarrawarrah on scheduled runs through the Sutherland Shire, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
If you are near Loftus station, Engadine station or Pendlebury Park, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Yarrawarrah for us.
Sutherland Shire is the council area for Yarrawarrah, and we treat Loftus, Engadine and Woronora Heights on the same schedule. Bush edges keep re-supplying the problem, which is why we treat the boundary rather than only the interior.
Most Yarrawarrah bookings come in as homes on sloping blocks with a sub-floor and bush on the boundary. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
All of 2233 falls inside the area we service.
The 2233 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Loftus and Engadine fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
One German cockroach egg case holds about forty young, and a female carries it until days before they hatch. That is why a kitchen in Yarrawarrah can look clear for a fortnight and then be worse than when you started. Kill the adults you can see and you have removed maybe a tenth of what is living behind the kickboards.
Worth knowing before you blame yourself: this species is almost always introduced. Flatten cardboard rather than storing it, and check any used appliance before it comes inside.
The whole job is finding where they shelter. We go looking for what stays warm overnight and never gets wiped: inside appliance housings, under drawer bases, around cable entries, behind the kickboard in a Yarrawarrah kitchen.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

The small indoor one - about 12 to 15 mm, light brown, with a pair of dark bands just behind the head. It stays close to warmth and water, which is why kitchens and bathrooms are where it establishes.

Large and reddish-brown, up to about 4 cm. It lives in sewers, stormwater pits, grease traps and subfloors, and comes up through drains at night rather than breeding in the kitchen.

Similar in size to the American cockroach, told apart by the yellow margins at the head and wing edges. An outdoor species - gardens, mulch, the subfloor - that makes its way in.

A small banded cockroach that favours warmth and dryness rather than moisture. Look for it high up: behind frames, inside electrical enclosures and in cupboards well away from the sink.

One of our Sydney inspections, showing German cockroach activity. The harbourage itself tells the story: droppings, cast skins and egg cases give us both the species and the scale.

From a commercial kitchen we service: cockroach harbourage inside the machinery. Hollow legs, door seals and motor housings keep their heat overnight and are almost never cleaned.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cockroaches barely 15 mm out in the open by day, with dark pepper-like specks where cupboards meet | German cockroach, and an established one | Inside hinges, appliance cavities, the kickboard void, the housings of the appliances themselves | Gel baits rotated through the job, a growth regulator, and crack-and-crevice application indoors |
| One or two large cockroaches at night near the laundry, bathroom or floor waste | American cockroach | Sewer and stormwater pits, subfloor, dry floor-waste traps | Drain and pit treatment, subfloor, sealing gaps around pipes |
| Big yellow-margined cockroaches that seem to come from the garden rather than the kitchen | Australian cockroach | Garden mulch, leaf litter and woodpiles, plus the roof cavity | Treating outside: the perimeter, the roof void, and the harbourage in the beds themselves |
| Small cockroaches turning up in bedrooms and living rooms, never around the sink | Brown-banded cockroach | Warm dry furniture, and the inside of electrical appliances | Bait placed through the living and sleeping areas where they actually are |
| Cockroaches in a unit that keep returning weeks after your own treatment | German cockroach moving between units | Shared service risers, bin rooms and wall cavities | A coordinated building treatment. See strata pest control |

The egg case - around 30 eggs, carried by the female until just before hatching - is shielded from anything applied to a surface. That is why the population reappears after a DIY attempt.
Each female can produce several egg cases in her life, and the young mature in weeks in a warm kitchen. A few cockroaches become an infestation quickly.
Foggers and retail sprays drive the population further into cavities and across into neighbouring units, while leaving residue on the surfaces you cook on.
The allergen load - droppings, saliva, cast skins - is a recognised trigger for asthma and allergies, which is why clearing an infestation properly matters beyond the nuisance.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
We confirm the species and use a torch and inspection mirror to find harbourage: hinges, appliance housings, kickboards and wall voids. The treatment follows what we find, not a standard routine.
Where build-up is feeding them, you will get a short list of what to clean and the order to do it in - bait has to out-compete everything else available.
Rather than spray, we put small amounts of gel exactly where they travel. They eat and return to shelter, and that is how the treatment reaches the ones you never see.
A growth regulator prevents the young reaching breeding age, while dust treats the wall voids and cavities that gel placement cannot get into.
The outdoor species need outdoor treatment - stormwater pits, floor wastes, under the floor and the roof cavity, which is where they actually live before they reach your kitchen.
You receive a written summary of what was found and done. Heavy activity after two weeks, or a return within the 6-month general-treatment warranty, brings us back free of charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Deals with the individual in front of you | Never touches the egg cases or the voids, and drives the rest further into the walls |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Gets product onto every open surface at once | Harbourage is missed, benches end up with residue, and the colony splits up |
| Retail bait stations | A sensible first try on a light problem | Bait volume is too low for a colony, and competing food beats it |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Taken back into the harbourage and passed on; we can change formulation if they go off one | Wants a clean kitchen behind it, and takes days to a fortnight rather than minutes |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops nymphs maturing into breeding adults, which breaks the egg-case cycle | Works slowly, so it is always paired with bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
Seeing more of them at first is expected. They come out, move slowly and die - the bait and growth regulator doing their job. Sweep up and leave everything else alone.
Through the second week activity should fall away. Leave the bait in place in hinges and cracks, and resist spraying anything over it, which puts cockroaches off feeding.
Keep the agent or building manager informed if it does not settle; cockroaches travel between flats. Our apartment pest control page covers the options for a whole block.
Call 1300 313 373 if activity is still steady after a fortnight, or if they come back within the 6 months a general treatment covers. The re-treatment is under warranty.
The pattern we see across Yarrawarrah and the wider Sutherland Shire is a surge after the first properly warm week, then steady pressure until autumn. Treating before that surge is far cheaper than treating after it.
A cockroach sighting in a Yarrawarrah food business is a compliance problem before it is a pest problem. The program we run is built so the paperwork exists before anyone asks for it.
Cockroaches do not respect a lease boundary. In a Yarrawarrah block they move through service risers, shared drains and the cavity between units, so treating one kitchen in a building with a problem is money spent on a holding pattern.
The species sets the method - gel and growth regulator indoors for German cockroaches, pits and subfloor for the drain dwellers.
Precise gel placement into cracks and hinges rather than spraying the surfaces you cook on.
Single units through to commercial kitchens, with food premises worked outside trading hours.
If cockroaches return inside 6 months of a general treatment, we come back free of charge.
