Budding splits the colony
Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.

Where Green Valley sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our South West Sydney technicians cover Green Valley and the rest of 2168 as a matter of course - it is only about 31.9 km west of the city. We cover Green Valley on scheduled runs through the South West Sydney, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
The Green Valley addresses we attend cluster around Green Valley Village Shopping Centre and Bradshaw Park. Middlehope Park is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
Green Valley is in the Liverpool, Fairfield and Cumberland area, and we cover Hinchinbrook, Busby and Bonnyrigg Heights on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Newer estate housing sits close together on small blocks, so what happens next door matters. We check the boundary and the fence line, not just the house.
What we see in Green Valley is recently built homes where the activity started at the boundary. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
We also work the area near Valley Plaza Shopping Centre, and the rest of 2168 with it.
When you book, we confirm the 2168 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Hinchinbrook or Busby that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
Some ants want protein, some want sugar, and the wrong bait gets ignored completely. Identifying what is trailing through a Green Valley kitchen is the difference between a result and a wasted visit.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Green Valley kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
If there are ants running up a shrub beside a Green Valley house, look for scale or aphids on it. They are farming, and that food source is what sustains the colony.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

Photo from an Elite job: gel bait placed along an active trail. The ants are left to feed and carry the bait home, so we ask customers not to wipe or spray the trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in lawns and garden beds. Their stings hurt and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

Argentine ants and a number of house ants carry multiple queens. Spray them with a repellent and a queen plus a few hundred workers simply moves out and starts again nearby.
Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
A bait program works over days. The worst thing you can do is spray the trail once we have gone - those ants are the delivery system. See our blog on budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
The perimeter gets a non-repellent product - foundation, weep holes, door frames, paths - which intercepts ants before they are inside.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugary liquids and honeydew, plus protein when raising brood | Sweet gel bait on trails, non-repellent perimeter at weep holes and frames | Wiping trails with detergent daily, which keeps the colony foraging elsewhere |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oil | Oil-based granular bait applied to paving and lawn edges | Pouring insecticide into one pile and assuming that was the colony |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Nocturnal, on sweet foods and insects | Trails inspected at night, bait placed near the nest, timber moisture fixed | Only ever treating during the day, when there is nothing to see |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies become active and start on brood, which shifts them onto protein | Early indoor trails, and sand piles returning to the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Little happening outdoors, but a nest in a heated wall stays active | Activity around heaters, the hot water unit and kitchen areas |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
If a trail runs up a shrub rather than into the house, the colony is farming aphids or scale for honeydew. Treating indoors will not stop it; the plant has to be dealt with too.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in Green Valley after a storm is almost always this.
We are around Valley Plaza Shopping Centre most weeks and cover every street in 2168, including the ones off the main roads.
Finding the nest is the job - following the trail to it, not treating the visible end of it.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.

At roughly 31.9 km west of the city, Green Valley is on a route we run regularly. We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. You will be given a time, not a window.
The ground here was cleared and rebuilt recently, which displaced whatever lived in it, and the blocks are close enough that ants move between them along the fence lines.
Estate housing on small lots, which means the outside of the building matters as much as the inside.
We do all of those. A good share of the Green Valley jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
