Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.

Where Maroota sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West technicians cover Maroota and the rest of 2756 as a matter of course - it is only about 50.4 km north-west of the city. We travel out to Maroota on planned runs through the Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West, so booking a day ahead gets you the best slot.
Del Rio Golf Course is the part of Maroota we attend most often.
Under Hawkesbury, we cover Maroota and Leets Vale, Laughtondale and Lower Hawkesbury alike. With acreage the problem is often outside the house entirely - sheds, woodpiles and outbuildings get inspected too.
Around Maroota the pattern is fairly consistent: acreage properties with outbuildings that need checking alongside the house. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
Wherever you are in 2756, you are inside the area our technicians cover.
The 2756 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Leets Vale and Laughtondale fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
In a dry spell ants move indoors looking for moisture, which is why a spotless Maroota kitchen still gets trails in January. The sink, the pet bowl and the shower recess are the attractions.
Several of the species we treat around Maroota are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Maroota kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small, shiny and black, and one of the most common kitchen ants in Sydney. It trails along skirting boards, window frames and power cables, and nests in wall voids, roof spaces and garden edges. It readily takes sweet baits.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

These are the large night-active ants that nest in soil, hollow trees and timber that has softened with damp. Structural damage is uncommon in Australia, but a wall nest points to a leak worth chasing.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
Warmth is what draws them into switches and electrical fittings. Never spray into a power point - tell us instead and we will treat it safely.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
Trails in the bathroom point to water in the wall or a slow leak the ants have found.
Lawns and garden beds are where bull ants and jumper ants nest. Their stings are painful and can trigger severe allergic reactions.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
If the bait is not what they want today, they will walk past it. Preference moves between sugar and protein with brood demand, so we test and change as needed.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, mostly at night | Night-time trail inspection, bait near the nest, fix moisture in timber | Treating only in daylight when the ants are not active |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar outdoors | Direct nest treatment in lawns and garden beds | Digging into the nest by hand and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging at its height, and mating flights whenever it turns warm and humid | Winged ants indoors, and much heavier trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Quiet outside, but colonies in warm wall cavities keep working | Ants around the heater, the hot water unit and the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Mulch against the wall, a shrub touching the eaves and a damp garden bed along the footings all put ants within reach of the building. In Maroota we routinely find the colony is in the garden, not the house.
The Hawkesbury & the Rural North-West pattern is a surge after the first warm fortnight, then steady pressure into March. A colony treated in September is a fraction of the job it is in January.
After sustained rain in Maroota we get a run of calls, and the cause is consistent: shallow nests waterlogged, the colony moved into a wall cavity or subfloor to dry out.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Sprays that scatter a colony are avoided entirely in favour of non-repellents the ants deliver themselves.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.
