Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Postcode 2146 covers Old Toongabbie and the streets immediately around it. At about 24.2 km west of the CBD it falls in the Greater Parramatta & Cumberland, where we have vans out daily. We run Old Toongabbie on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Pendle Hill station, Robin Hood Park or Portico Park, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Old Toongabbie for us.
City of Parramatta and Cumberland is the council area for Old Toongabbie, and we treat Toongabbie, Constitution Hill and Winston Hills on the same schedule. Most of the housing here shares a wall, a roof void or a sub-floor with something else, so we check what adjoins the property rather than treating it in isolation.
What we see in Old Toongabbie is apartments and converted blocks where the kitchen backs onto a service riser. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
Beyond that we are regularly around Portico Plaza Shopping Centre, and out as far as Winston Hills Mall. If you are anywhere in 2146, you are inside the area we run.
The 2146 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Toongabbie and Constitution Hill fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
People expect a single nest. Coastal brown ants and Argentine ants run dozens of connected nests across a property and beyond it, so the question is never just where it is but how far it goes.
Many ants get most of their sugar from honeydew - the secretion of aphids and scale insects they actively protect on garden plants. A Old Toongabbie garden with a scale problem is feeding the ant colony that then comes indoors.
People assume a trail means something was left out. Around Old Toongabbie it is just as likely to be the bathroom, because water is the scarcer resource in summer.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

The small glossy black one you find in the kitchen. It runs along skirtings, window frames and cabling, nesting in wall cavities, roof voids and the edges of garden beds, and it takes sweet bait without much persuading.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

Dull brown, small, and noticeable for the thickness and speed of its trails. Multi-queen nests connect to neighbouring ones, which is how an infestation covers several properties. Repellents make it markedly worse.

Large ants, often active at night, that nest in soil, hollow trees and softened or damp timber. Unlike the notorious overseas species they are rarely a structural pest, but a nest in a wall often points to a leak worth fixing.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
If fine soil keeps appearing in the paving joints and along the drive, coastal brown ants are nesting beneath it.
Ants nesting in switches and electrical fittings are drawn to the warmth. Do not spray into power points; tell us so we can treat safely.
Winged ants swarming in the warmer months are reproductives on a mating flight. Indoors, that can indicate an established colony within the structure.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Retail sprays repel: the ants know they are there and go round. Professional non-repellents do not register, so the foragers deliver the active to the colony for us.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
A test with small amounts of each bait type - sweet, protein, oil-based - tells us what the colony wants at this point in its cycle.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Granular bait, or direct nest treatment, for the coastal brown ant nests under paving and at lawn edges.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugar for the most part, with periodic protein demand | Slow baits and a non-repellent applied along the property line | Using a repellent barrier spray - it divides the multi-queen colony |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Activity resumes and brood rearing starts, so the colony wants protein | Trails appearing indoors again, and fresh sand piles in the paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
The Greater Parramatta & Cumberland pattern is a surge after the first warm fortnight, then steady pressure into March. A colony treated in September is a fraction of the job it is in January.
Nests under paving are sheltered, warm and almost impossible to flood out. They need bait placed at the active entrances, not a hose.
We are around Portico Plaza Shopping Centre most weeks and cover every street in 2146, including the ones off the main roads.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Sweet, protein or oil-based baits chosen for the ant and the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
A general ant treatment carries 6 months of cover - if they return inside it, so do we.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Old Toongabbie and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Old Toongabbie is about 24.2 km west of the CBD in the Greater Parramatta & Cumberland, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
Joined housing is the reason. Where walls, roof voids and sub-floors are continuous between properties, ants are a street-level problem rather than a house-level one.
Terraces and semis that share walls, roof voids and drainage - so we look at what the property adjoins before deciding where product goes.
We do all of those. A good share of the Old Toongabbie jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
Yes, with the usual care. Everything is APVMA-registered and used to label, and we will work around pets, aquariums and anyone in the house with a respiratory condition if you tell us when you book.
You do not normally need to leave. Anything requiring an empty room is short, and you will know about it before the work starts.
Typically one to two hours on site. What extends it is size, access and how far the problem has gone, all of which are accounted for in the quote.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. So if they turn up again within the warranty, ring us and we will attend.
We cover the whole of Old Toongabbie, from the streets around Portico Plaza Shopping Centre out to the suburb boundary and on into Toongabbie.
