Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

Where Redfern sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our Inner South & City Fringe technicians cover Redfern and the rest of 2016 as a matter of course - it is only about 2.6 km south of the city. Our technicians are through Redfern most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Our Redfern work takes in the streets by Central Grand Concourse station and Great Buckingham Street Reserve, through to University Sports & Aquatic Centre at the other end.
Redfern is in the City of Sydney and Bayside area, and we cover Waterloo, Moore Park and Zetland on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
Most Redfern bookings come in as terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Say which one applies when you call 1300 313 373 and the technician will have the right products on the van.
We also work the streets near Jack Floyd Reserve and across toward Broadway Shopping Centre - the whole of 2016 is covered.
We confirm your slot the day before and arrive at a stated time. Waterloo and Moore Park sit on the same run, so earlier appointments in 2016 come up regularly.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Redfern kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
A colony can occupy a garden bed, a paving slab and a wall cavity at once. That is why a single treated nest in Redfern changes very little on its own.
Indoor nests sit in wall cavities, behind splashbacks, under baths and in roof insulation. Finding them is most of the work on a Redfern job.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Shiny, black and small - Sydney's most common indoor ant. Trails follow skirting boards, window frames and power cables back to nests in wall voids, roof spaces or garden edges. Sweet baits work well on it.

Tiny brown ants with a larger-headed soldier caste. The giveaway is loose sandy soil pushed up between pavers, along slab edges and in grout. Colonies are large with many nests, and oil-based granular baits work well.

Small, dull brown and fast-moving in thick trails. Nests hold many queens and connect with neighbouring nests, so infestations can stretch across several properties. Repellent sprays are especially counter-productive with this species.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

An Elite job photo showing a nest in masonry. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead into the wall cavity - the spot black house ants most often choose.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.
Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
It takes days for bait to move through a colony. Spraying the trail the day after our visit kills the very ants delivering it - our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
First the species, then the trails - followed back to where they enter and to nests in the wall, under paving, at garden edges or in the roof space.
Small amounts of sweet, protein and oil-based bait show what the colony is feeding on right now.
Indoor placements are gel on the trail - skirting, window frames, travel routes - sited away from children and pets.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
Under-paver and lawn-edge nests are handled with granular bait, or treated directly where that is better.
You receive the job summary in writing, guidance on what to leave alone, and 6 months of warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Oils and protein rather than sugars | Granular bait with an oil base, spread on paving and at the lawn edge | Boiling water down one hole - there are dozens of other nests |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | The colony restarts and begins brood production, raising its protein needs | First trails inside, and sandy soil showing up in paving joints |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Heavy rain floods shallow nests, and the colony moves to the nearest dry cavity - which is usually a wall, a subfloor or under a slab. A sudden indoor trail in Redfern after a storm is almost always this.
The Inner South & City Fringe pattern is a surge after the first warm fortnight, then steady pressure into March. A colony treated in September is a fraction of the job it is in January.
Fine soil pushed up along paving joints, path edges and garden edging is excavation - there is a nest directly beneath. Around Redfern that is coastal brown ants more often than not.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Which bait we use depends on the ant and the season: sweet, protein or oil-based.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
If ants return within 6 months of a general treatment, we return at no charge.

Same-day attendance is usually available. We are about 2.6 km south of the city here, and Redfern is covered by the Inner South & City Fringe team.
Most of this area is terrace, semi and converted block, and those share more than people realise - cavities, roof spaces, drainage. ants use all of it.
Terraces and semis, often with a paved rear courtyard that traps damp against the wall - both of which shape the job.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Redfern 2016, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
It is, applied properly. We put product into cracks, voids and stations rather than across open surfaces, and we will tell you what to stay off and for how long before we leave.
Usually not. Most ant control work is done with you there, and anything that needs the room vacated is for a short period we will tell you about beforehand.
Allow an hour to two hours for most properties. A bigger building, or one where the problem has spread, takes longer - and we would rather tell you that when quoting than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Call us if activity picks up again and we will arrange the return visit.
We do. Redfern and Waterloo, Moore Park, Zetland and Paddington are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
