Budding splits the colony
A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.

Where Tamarama sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Tamarama sits about 6.3 km south-east of the CBD in the Eastern Suburbs, and postcode 2026 is one we are in most weeks. Our technicians are through Tamarama most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Tamarama Park, Bronte-Coogee Aquatic Reserve or Tamarama Beach, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Tamarama for us.
Waverley, Randwick and Woollahra is the council area for Tamarama, and we treat Bondi, Bronte and Waverley on the same schedule. Being this close to the coast, sub-floors and ground-floor bathrooms stay damp most of the year, which is the condition that keeps activity going.
Around Tamarama the pattern is fairly consistent: ground-floor units with a damp sub-floor, and houses where the garage sits below the living level. Tell us which it is on the phone and we will come prepared for it.
Our Tamarama runs also take in Westfield Bondi Junction and the area near Bondi Golf Course, so the whole postcode is served.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Bondi and Bronte are covered on the same round, 2026 often has an earlier slot available.
If there are ants running up a shrub beside a Tamarama house, look for scale or aphids on it. They are farming, and that food source is what sustains the colony.
Indoor nests sit in wall cavities, behind splashbacks, under baths and in roof insulation. Finding them is most of the work on a Tamarama job.
A trail along a bench is foragers, and foragers are maybe five per cent of the colony. The queens, the brood and most of the workers are in a nest you have not found, which is why wiping the trail achieves nothing lasting in a Tamarama kitchen.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

Small and shiny black. It is the usual kitchen ant here, trailing along skirting boards, window frames and power cables from nests in wall voids, roof spaces and the garden edge, and it takes sweet bait easily.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

An Elite photo of ants emerging from mortar. The route runs through weep holes and cracked joints straight into the wall cavity, which is the usual home for a black house ant colony.

From an Elite job - gel bait set down on a live trail. The ants feed and carry it back to the nest, which is why we ask you not to wipe or spray that trail afterwards.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
When they come in from the outside wall, the nest is usually in the cavity or just outside in the garden. We work back from the entry point.
That fine sandy soil appearing between pavers, along the driveway and at slab joints is the classic coastal brown ant sign - they are nesting below.
A nest in a power point or appliance is about warmth. Spraying into electrical fittings is dangerous - tell us and we will treat it the right way.
Swarming winged ants in spring or summer are a mating flight. Seen inside the house, it often means the colony is mature and in the building.
Bathroom trails around the shower, basin or toilet normally mean water: damp in the wall cavity, or a slow leak supplying the colony.
Bull ants and jumper ants nest in the lawn and garden beds. The sting is genuinely painful and in some people causes a serious allergic reaction.

A repellent does not kill a multi-queen colony, it divides it. A queen and several hundred workers shift to a new site, leaving you with two nests instead of one.
Repellent means detectable, and detectable means avoided. Non-repellent products let foragers walk through and transfer the active to the rest of the nest.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Bait takes days to work through a colony. If you spray the trail the day after we leave, you kill the couriers. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
Species confirmed, then trails traced to entry points and to the nests - walls, paving, garden edges, roof space.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Gel bait goes along trails, window frames and skirting where ants travel, out of reach of children and pets.
A non-repellent treatment around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths intercepts ants coming in.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
You get a summary, advice on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugars primarily, sometimes protein | Slow-acting baits combined with non-repellent treatment across the boundary | A repellent barrier, which splits nests that hold many queens |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Insects and nectar outdoors | Direct nest treatment in lawns and garden beds | Digging into the nest by hand and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | The busiest foraging period, with mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants on the wing, and thick trails after a storm or a hot spell |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Full colony size, and foraging to build stores before it cools | Pantry trails, and ants on the pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
The garden is usually the source. Shrubs touching the walls, mulch up against the footings and irrigated beds give a colony everything it needs within a metre of your kitchen.
Nests under paving are sheltered, warm and almost impossible to flood out. They need bait placed at the active entrances, not a hose.
For a Tamarama cafe or kitchen, ants are a compliance finding. We run a documented program with monitoring points and reports your auditor will accept rather than a one-off spray.
The trail gets traced to its source. Spraying where you saw ants achieves very little.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. What changes the figure is the size of the building, how many areas are affected and the access. You get that number up front for Tamarama 2026, with no call-out fee. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Tamarama sits roughly 6.3 km south-east of the CBD, inside our Eastern Suburbs run, so we book a time and keep to it.
Being near the water means humidity that never really drops. Sub-floors stay moist, lower levels stay cool and damp, and ants do well in both.
Walk-up blocks and free-standing houses, with moisture the common factor. The sub-floor gets as much attention as the kitchen.
We do. A lot of our Tamarama work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.
It is, provided the instructions are followed. We will tell you what to keep clear of and for how long before we leave. Let us know about children, pets or fish tanks when you book.
In most cases you can stay. Where an area does need to be left clear it is for a couple of hours at most, and we say so before we start.
An hour to two hours covers most jobs. The size of the building and the extent of the problem are what change it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
All of them. Tamarama sits alongside Bondi, Bronte, Waverley and Bondi Beach in our coverage, and they are serviced on the same schedule.
