Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Postcode 2102 covers Warriewood and the streets immediately around it. At about 21.6 km north of the CBD it falls in the Northern Beaches, where we have vans out daily. We run Warriewood on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
The Warriewood addresses we attend cluster around Shearwater Reserve and Northern Beaches Indoor Sports Centre. Turimetta Headland Reserve is another part of the suburb we are called to often.
Northern Beaches is the council area for Warriewood, and we treat Mona Vale, Elanora Heights and Ingleside on the same schedule. Salt air and sandy ground keep sub-floors damp here, and damp is what sustains a population.
The bulk of our Warriewood work is unit blocks a street or two back from the water, plus the odd beachfront cafe. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
We cover the remainder of 2102 as well, from Warriewood Beach through to Pittwater Golf Centre.
The 2102 run is set the day before and you are given an arrival time. Where Mona Vale and Elanora Heights fall on the same round, we can usually bring the visit forward.
Ants lay a pheromone trail that other workers follow, which is why the line is so precise and why it reappears in exactly the same place after you wipe it. Cleaning a Warriewood kitchen removes the smell for a few hours, not the colony that laid it.
In a dry spell ants move indoors looking for moisture, which is why a spotless Warriewood kitchen still gets trails in January. The sink, the pet bowl and the shower recess are the attractions.
A colony's preference also shifts with the season. Spring brood-rearing wants protein; later in summer the same Warriewood colony wants sugars.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Minute brown ants with larger-headed soldiers among them. Fine sand in paving joints, at slab edges and in grout is the tell. Because a colony holds many nests, oil-based granular baits are the right approach.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large and mostly nocturnal, nesting in soil, hollow trees and damp or softened timber. They rarely damage structure here, though a nest inside a wall is a reliable sign of moisture that needs attention.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

Gel bait on a working trail, from one of our jobs. Ants feed and carry it to the nest, so wiping or spraying the trail afterwards undoes the treatment.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
Ants arriving from the outside wall usually nest in the cavity or garden edge. The entry point is where we start tracing.
Fine soil pushed up along paving, driveways and slab joints is the classic sign of coastal brown ants nesting underneath.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
A colony only takes bait if it wants that food at that moment. Ants switch between sugar and protein as their brood needs change, so we test preferences and change baits when needed.
Give it days, not hours. Bait has to be carried through the colony, and spraying the trail afterwards destroys the couriers doing that work. Our blog covers budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
Sweet, protein and oil-based baits are offered in small amounts so the colony shows us its current preference.
Gel is placed on the trails themselves - along window frames and skirting boards - and positioned out of reach of children and pets.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
Granular bait or direct treatment for coastal brown ant nests under pavers and in lawn edges.
A written summary, clear advice on what not to spray afterwards, and a 6-month warranty on the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Chiefly sugars, with protein at intervals | Slow-release baits plus a non-repellent treatment along the property line | Repellent sprays at the boundary, which make a multi-queen colony bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Insects and sweet foods, taken mainly at night | A night inspection of the trails, bait near the nest, and moisture in timber repaired | Daytime-only treatment, which misses them entirely |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak foraging, mating flights after warm humid weather | Winged ants, heavy trails after storms and heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | The colony is at its largest and laying in stores before winter | Trails running into pantries and to pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Winter does not kill the colony, it just slows it. The nest under a Warriewood path in July is the same nest that produces the trail in October.
Our Warriewood runs take in Turimetta Headland Reserve and continue across to the Mona Vale boundary - all the same service area.
Honeydew is a sugar supply the colony will defend. We point out the plant on a Warriewood job because otherwise the trail simply re-establishes.
We follow the trail back to the colony rather than treating the spot where you noticed it.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Nothing repellent, because that causes budding. Non-repellent products get carried home instead.
General ant treatments are covered. If ants come back within 6 months, so do we.

At roughly 21.6 km north of the city, Warriewood is on a route we run regularly. Same-day attendance is usually available. You will be given a time, not a window.
Salt air and sandy ground keep sub-floors and ground-floor wet areas damp for most of the year, and sustained damp is exactly what ants need to establish.
Units near the water and houses set back from it, with damp sub-floors the common factor in both.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Warriewood 2102, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
Yes, applied correctly. Products are registered for this use, placed out of reach rather than across open surfaces, and you will know what to stay off and for how long.
In the great majority of jobs, no. If one area needs to be left for an hour or two we say so before we start rather than after.
For a standard Warriewood home, one to two hours. We would rather tell you it will take longer up front than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Call us if activity picks up again and we will arrange the return visit.
We cover the whole of Warriewood, from the streets around Turimetta Headland Reserve out to the suburb boundary and on into Mona Vale.
