Where Brooklyn sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Brooklyn sits about 35.6 km north of the CBD in the Upper North Shore, and postcode 2083 is one we are in most weeks. We cover Brooklyn on scheduled runs through the Upper North Shore, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
A lot of our Brooklyn jobs are in the streets around Brooklyn Park Conservation Reserve and Hawkesbury River station, and we are out near Long Island Nature Reserve regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
The suburb sits in the Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby area. Dangar Island, Cowan and Berowra Creek are all covered on the same day, so a problem that has spread across a boundary can be handled in one visit. With bushland close by there is constant pressure from outside, so the perimeter and the fence line get as much attention as the house.
What we see in Brooklyn is houses backing onto a reserve, where the pressure is constant from outside. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
Every part of 2083 is covered as standard.
Your appointment is confirmed the day before with a real arrival time. Because Dangar Island and Cowan are covered on the same round, 2083 often has an earlier slot available.
One German cockroach egg case holds about forty young, and a female carries it until days before they hatch. That is why a kitchen in Brooklyn can look clear for a fortnight and then be worse than when you started. Kill the adults you can see and you have removed maybe a tenth of what is living behind the kickboards.
Cockroaches avoid light, so seeing one in daylight is not a chance encounter - it usually means the harbourage is crowded enough to push individuals out into the open. A daytime sighting in a Brooklyn kitchen is a sign of scale, not bad luck.
Cockroaches do not respect a lease boundary. In a Brooklyn block they move through service risers, shared drains and the cavity between units, so treating one kitchen in a building with a problem is money spent on a holding pattern.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Small, 12 to 15 mm, light brown, marked with two dark stripes behind the head. This is the indoor breeder: it wants warmth, food and damp, and a kitchen supplies all three.

Large and reddish-brown, up to about 4 cm. It lives in sewers, stormwater pits, grease traps and subfloors, and comes up through drains at night rather than breeding in the kitchen.

As big as the American but marked with pale yellow along the edge of the wings and behind the head. The name misleads: this one lives outside in mulch and garden beds and only comes indoors to look about.

A small cockroach with light bands across the body, found away from water in warm dry positions: behind frames, in electrical fittings, in cupboards at height.

From one of our own inspections: German cockroach harbourage in a Sydney kitchen. The droppings, shed skins and egg cases are what we read to judge the species and the size of the population.

From a commercial kitchen we service: cockroach harbourage inside the machinery. Hollow legs, door seals and motor housings keep their heat overnight and are almost never cleaned.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches moving about in daylight, and droppings like ground pepper along shelf edges | German cockroach, well established by the time they show in the day | Door hinges, the voids behind white goods, the kickboard space, the inside of appliances | Indoor work: bait rotation, a growth regulator, and placement into every crack and crevice |
| The occasional large cockroach at night in a wet area rather than a group in the kitchen | American cockroach | Pits, the subfloor, and floor wastes that are no longer holding water | Drain and pit treatment plus subfloor work, with pipe gaps sealed afterwards |
| Large cockroaches with yellow edging, seen in the garage or coming in from the garden | Australian cockroach | Mulch, leaf litter, woodpiles, roof void | External perimeter, roof void dusting, garden harbourage |
| Small ones in a bedroom or living room - behind a picture, inside the TV cabinet - not near water | Brown-banded cockroach | Furniture and electrical gear that stays warm and dry | Baiting aimed at the living and sleeping rooms rather than the kitchen |
| A flat that clears for a fortnight and then has cockroaches again | German cockroach moving through the building | Shared risers, the bin room, and cavities running between walls | A coordinated treatment across the block. See strata pest control |

The egg case - around 30 eggs, carried by the female until just before hatching - is shielded from anything applied to a surface. That is why the population reappears after a DIY attempt.
A female will make several egg cases, and in kitchen warmth her young are breeding within weeks. Small numbers do not stay small.
Bombs and supermarket sprays push cockroaches deeper into wall voids and into the unit next door, and can contaminate the surfaces you prepare food on.
Cockroach droppings, saliva and cast skins are recognised triggers for allergies and asthma, so a lingering infestation is a health issue as well as a nuisance.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
First we establish which cockroach it is, then map where it lives - torch and mirror into hinges, motor cavities, behind kickboards and into wall voids. Everything after this depends on that map.
If grease or food residue is sustaining the population, we point out exactly what to clean and in what order. Bait competes with whatever else is available, so this step changes the result.
Dots of professional gel are placed in the cracks they run through. One feeds, carries it back to the harbourage, and it works through the colony from the inside.
The growth regulator keeps nymphs from ever breeding; dust handles the wall voids and cavities that no gel dot can reach.
The outdoor species need outdoor treatment - stormwater pits, floor wastes, under the floor and the roof cavity, which is where they actually live before they reach your kitchen.
We leave you a written record of the job. If it is still heavy at two weeks, or comes back inside the 6 months a general treatment carries, we return at no charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Quick on a cockroach you can actually reach | No effect on egg cases or harbourage, and it pushes the others deeper into cavities |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Treats the exposed surfaces of a room in one go | Nothing reaches the hiding places, residue settles on food surfaces, and the colony scatters |
| Retail bait stations | Can help if you have only seen a few | The bait volume is small, and competing food such as grease wins out |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Eaten and shared in the hiding places; formulations can be rotated if cockroaches avoid one | Needs a clean kitchen and time to work, usually days to a couple of weeks |
| Insect growth regulator | Prevents the young reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Slow by design, so we never use it on its own - it goes in with bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
Cockroaches coming out in daylight and moving sluggishly is the normal first sign. The bait and growth regulator are working. Sweep up what you find and carry on.
Through the second week activity should fall away. Leave the bait in place in hinges and cracks, and resist spraying anything over it, which puts cockroaches off feeding.
Keep the agent or building manager informed if it does not settle; cockroaches travel between flats. Our apartment pest control page covers the options for a whole block.

Humidity is the driver. In the Upper North Shore the summer months bring the fastest breeding, and the mild winters mean a population indoors never really slows - it just gets quieter.
Floor wastes, overflow pipes and the gap where a waste pipe passes through a cupboard base are all cockroach routes. A dry floor waste in a Brooklyn laundry is an open door, and a cup of water down it once a week closes it.
From Hawkesbury River station through to the Dangar Island side of Brooklyn, it is all one service area for us - same price, same response time.
German cockroaches get baits and growth regulators, and drain species get pit and subfloor work. The species decides the treatment.
We bait into cracks and hinges instead of spraying benchtops, because that is where food is prepared.
Single units through to commercial kitchens, with food premises worked outside trading hours.
A general treatment is covered for 6 months. Cockroaches inside that period mean a free return visit.

Get a Free QuoteA cockroach treatment starts from $89. We quote on the property rather than the postcode, so a unit in Brooklyn and a large house are priced differently. The figure is fixed before any work starts. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. We are about 35.6 km north of the city here, and Brooklyn is covered by the Upper North Shore team.
Properties on a bush edge get re-supplied continuously. That is why our work in Brooklyn is as much about the fence line and the perimeter as the inside of the house.
Free-standing homes with gardens running into bush. We treat the boundary as seriously as the building.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Brooklyn 2083, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.
Yes, applied correctly. Products are registered for this use, placed out of reach rather than across open surfaces, and you will know what to stay off and for how long.
In the great majority of jobs, no. If one area needs to be left for an hour or two we say so before we start rather than after.
Allow an hour to two hours for most properties. A bigger building, or one where the problem has spread, takes longer - and we would rather tell you that when quoting than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. A return visit inside that period does not cost you anything.
Yes. As well as Brooklyn we cover Dangar Island, Cowan, Berowra Creek and Cottage Point on the same runs, so a job that crosses a boundary can be handled in one visit.
