Seeing more of them at first is expected. They come out, move slowly and die - the bait and growth regulator doing their job. Sweep up and leave everything else alone.

Curl Curl is part of the Northern Beaches, 13.1 km or so north-east of the GPO, and 2096 is a postcode we know well. We run Curl Curl on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Cooksey Reserve, Harbord Bowling and Recreation Club or Pavilion Reserve, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Curl Curl for us.
We work under the Northern Beaches area here, and Freshwater, North Curl Curl and Queenscliff are all on the same route, which matters when cockroach problems are moving between adjoining properties. Being this close to the coast, sub-floors and ground-floor bathrooms stay damp most of the year, which is the condition that keeps activity going.
Curl Curl jobs tend to be unit blocks a street or two back from the water, plus the odd beachfront cafe. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Beyond that we are regularly around Curl Curl Beach, and out as far as Dee Why Grand Shopping Centre. If you are anywhere in 2096, you are inside the area we run.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2096 run the day before, and if Freshwater or North Curl Curl is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Cockroaches do not respect a lease boundary. In a Curl Curl block they move through service risers, shared drains and the cavity between units, so treating one kitchen in a building with a problem is money spent on a holding pattern.
German cockroaches are small, light brown, and stay indoors near warmth and water. Australian and smoky-brown cockroaches are bigger, darker and come in from outside. In Curl Curl we see both, and they need completely different treatments - one is a kitchen job, the other is a perimeter job.
Roughly forty juveniles come out of one case, and they are breeding themselves inside ten weeks. Unless a Curl Curl treatment carries something that stops nymphs maturing, you are only ever resetting the clock.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

The small indoor one - about 12 to 15 mm, light brown, with a pair of dark bands just behind the head. It stays close to warmth and water, which is why kitchens and bathrooms are where it establishes.

Large and reddish-brown, up to about 4 cm. It lives in sewers, stormwater pits, grease traps and subfloors, and comes up through drains at night rather than breeding in the kitchen.

Similar in size to the American cockroach but with pale yellow edges near the head and along the wings. Despite the name it is an outdoor species that comes in from gardens, mulch and subfloors.

Small and marked with pale bands. It is the one that does not want water, so it settles high and dry - behind pictures, inside electrical housings, in the top cupboards.

From one of our own inspections: German cockroach harbourage in a Sydney kitchen. The droppings, shed skins and egg cases are what we read to judge the species and the size of the population.

From an Elite commercial job: harbourage found inside kitchen equipment. The motor housing, the door seal and the hollow leg hold warmth after close and almost never get cleaned out.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches you can see without a torch, plus droppings like coarse pepper on cupboard edges | German cockroach - daytime sightings mean a lot of them | Hinges, the cavity behind the fridge, under the kickboards, in the housings of the appliances | Gel bait rotated through the job, a growth regulator, and crack-and-crevice work indoors |
| Big cockroaches at night in the wet areas, never a crowd of them in the kitchen | American cockroach | Down in the pits and the subfloor, coming up through floor wastes with no water in them | We treat the pits and drain lines and the subfloor, then seal where the pipes come through |
| Large cockroaches with yellow edging, seen in the garage or coming in from the garden | Australian cockroach | Mulch, leaf litter, woodpiles, roof void | External perimeter, roof void dusting, garden harbourage |
| Little cockroaches well away from the kitchen: bedrooms, the TV unit, behind wall hangings | Brown-banded cockroach | Warm dry spots in furniture and inside appliances | Bait placed where they actually are, in the living and sleeping areas |
| An apartment where they come back a few weeks after you treated it yourself | German cockroach travelling between lots | The service risers, the bin room and the wall cavities the units share | Treating the building as one job. See strata pest control |

A licensed Sydney technician will talk it through with you and give you a fixed quote within half an hour.
The egg case - around 30 eggs, carried by the female until just before hatching - is shielded from anything applied to a surface. That is why the population reappears after a DIY attempt.
Multiply several egg cases per female by nymphs that mature in a few warm weeks and you have the reason a minor sighting turns into an infestation.
A repellent product scatters rather than clears - deeper into the wall void, through to the unit next door - and leaves residue where food is prepared.
What they leave behind matters: droppings, saliva and cast skins are known asthma and allergy triggers, so this is a health question as much as a comfort one.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
Species confirmation comes first, then the search. Torch and inspection mirror into cupboard hinges, appliance housings, the kickboard void and the wall cavity, so the treatment is aimed rather than general.
Grease and food residue keep a colony going, so we show you the spots that matter most. Bait only wins if it is the best meal in the room.
Professional gel goes down as small dots inside the cracks they already use. A cockroach feeds, goes home, and the product moves through the rest of the colony from there.
A growth regulator shuts down the next generation, and dust goes into the voids and cavities where gel simply cannot be placed.
The outdoor species need outdoor treatment - stormwater pits, floor wastes, under the floor and the roof cavity, which is where they actually live before they reach your kitchen.
You get a written summary. If activity is still heavy after two weeks or returns within 6 months of a general treatment, we come back at no charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Deals with the individual in front of you | Never touches the egg cases or the voids, and drives the rest further into the walls |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Covers open surfaces in a room | Misses harbourage, leaves residue on benches, and can scatter the colony |
| Retail bait stations | Has a place when you have only seen one or two | Very little bait in each, and any crumbs or grease will out-compete it |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Taken back into the harbourage and passed on; we can change formulation if they go off one | Wants a clean kitchen behind it, and takes days to a fortnight rather than minutes |
| Insect growth regulator | Prevents nymphs maturing, so the cycle of egg cases stops | Slow on its own, which is why it is never used without bait |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
Seeing more of them at first is expected. They come out, move slowly and die - the bait and growth regulator doing their job. Sweep up and leave everything else alone.
Numbers should drop away through this period. Do not wipe the bait out of hinges and cracks, and do not spray over it - cockroaches will stop taking bait that has been sprayed.
Keep the agent or building manager informed if it does not settle; cockroaches travel between flats. Our apartment pest control page covers the options for a whole block.
Call 1300 313 373 if activity is still steady after a fortnight, or if they come back within the 6 months a general treatment covers. The re-treatment is under warranty.
Sydney does not give cockroaches an off-season. Around Curl Curl the warm, humid stretch from October through March drives breeding hardest, but a heated Northern Beaches home keeps a kitchen population going through winter without pause.
Floor wastes, overflow pipes and the gap where a waste pipe passes through a cupboard base are all cockroach routes. A dry floor waste in a Curl Curl laundry is an open door, and a cup of water down it once a week closes it.
A good share of our Curl Curl work sits close to Pavilion Reserve, though the back streets and the Freshwater boundary are just as familiar.
Treatment follows identification. Indoor German cockroaches need bait and a growth regulator; drain-dwelling species need the pits and subfloor treated.
Bait placed in cracks and hinges, not a blanket spray over food preparation surfaces.
From single apartments to commercial kitchens serviced outside trading hours.
Six months on a general treatment - if they come back inside it, so do we, at no charge.

Get a Free QuoteA cockroach treatment starts from $89. The fixed price depends on the size of the property and how far the problem has spread, and we confirm it before we start - there is no call-out fee in Curl Curl 2096. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
Same-day attendance is usually available. Our Northern Beaches technicians cover Curl Curl daily, and you get a confirmed arrival time when you book.
Being near the water means humidity that never really drops. Sub-floors stay moist, lower levels stay cool and damp, and cockroaches do well in both.
A mix of walk-up blocks and free-standing homes, where the lower level and the sub-floor are what we concentrate on.
We do all of those. A good share of the Curl Curl jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
Yes. The products are registered for this use and applied at label rates, and placement keeps them away from where children and animals go. Let us know at booking about pets, fish tanks or anyone with asthma and we will plan the visit around it.
Most of the time you can carry on as normal. If a particular area needs to be empty we will flag it when we arrive and it is rarely more than a couple of hours.
For a standard Curl Curl home, one to two hours. We would rather tell you it will take longer up front than rush it.
Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Ring us if activity picks up again inside that period and we will arrange the return.
We do. Curl Curl and Freshwater, North Curl Curl, Queenscliff and Brookvale are all on the same route, which helps if you own more than one property in the area.
