Expect more sightings, not fewer - slow-moving cockroaches out in the open or dead on the floor. That is the bait and growth regulator taking effect. Sweep them up.

Where Menai sits, who covers it and what it costs.
If you are in Menai or anywhere else in 2234, you are in our Sutherland Shire patch, 24.4 km south-west of the CBD. We run Menai on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
Our Menai work takes in the streets by The Ridge Golf Course & Driving Range and Buckle Reserve, through to Menai Conservation Park at the other end.
Menai is in the Sutherland Shire area, and we cover Bangor, Woronora Heights and Alfords Point on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your cockroach problem has come from next door. Backing onto bush means re-entry is the issue, so proofing and the perimeter do the real work here.
The bulk of our Menai work is homes on sloping blocks with a sub-floor and bush on the boundary. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Menai Marketplace and the remainder of 2234 are on the same run.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2234 run the day before, and if Bangor or Woronora Heights is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Heat is an accelerator. Through a Menai summer the cycle from egg case to breeding adult runs weeks faster than it does in July, which is why a small problem noticed in spring is worth dealing with before Christmas.
A cockroach can last weeks on almost nothing to eat but only days without water. That is why perfectly clean Menai kitchens still get them: a dripping tap, a sweating pipe or a damp dishwasher seal is enough.
They need three things: warmth, damp and somewhere tight to wedge into. In a Menai kitchen that describes the back of the fridge, the cavity behind the splashback and the joint where the bench meets the wall, and that is exactly where product has to go.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

Around 12 to 15 mm, light brown, two dark stripes running back from the head. It never really leaves the building - warmth, a food source and a little moisture keep it going, and it out-breeds every other cockroach in a kitchen.

Large and reddish-brown, up to about 4 cm. It lives in sewers, stormwater pits, grease traps and subfloors, and comes up through drains at night rather than breeding in the kitchen.

Similar in size to the American cockroach but with pale yellow edges near the head and along the wings. Despite the name it is an outdoor species that comes in from gardens, mulch and subfloors.

A small banded cockroach that favours warmth and dryness rather than moisture. Look for it high up: behind frames, inside electrical enclosures and in cupboards well away from the sink.

From one of our own inspections: German cockroach harbourage in a Sydney kitchen. The droppings, shed skins and egg cases are what we read to judge the species and the size of the population.

Taken on an Elite commercial job - harbourage inside the equipment itself. Motor cavities, door seals and hollow legs stay warm all night and rarely see a cloth.
Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| A dozen small cockroaches on the bench in broad daylight, with dark specks in the cupboard corners | German cockroach, already a heavy infestation | The hinge of a cupboard door, behind the dishwasher and fridge, the kickboard void, inside appliances | Bait rotation and a growth regulator, applied into cracks and crevices right through the kitchen |
| Large cockroaches turning up at night around wet areas, usually one at a time | American cockroach | The pit system, the subfloor, and any floor-waste trap that has lost its water seal | Pit and drain work, subfloor treatment, and closing off pipe penetrations |
| Sizeable cockroaches with pale edging that appear in the garage or at a back door | Australian cockroach | Leaf litter and mulch, stacked timber, and the roof cavity | Treating the perimeter, dusting the roof void, and reducing harbourage in the garden |
| Small cockroaches in bedrooms, in the TV unit or behind frames, away from the kitchen | Brown-banded cockroach | Warm, dry furniture and electrical appliances | Targeted baiting in living and sleeping areas |
| A unit where the problem never quite ends, weeks after a DIY attempt | German cockroach spreading from a neighbouring lot | Shared risers and bin rooms, plus the cavities inside shared walls | A building-wide, coordinated treatment. See strata pest control |

The egg case - around 30 eggs, carried by the female until just before hatching - is shielded from anything applied to a surface. That is why the population reappears after a DIY attempt.
One female produces several egg cases, and in a warm kitchen the young reach maturity within weeks. That is how a handful becomes a serious problem in a short time.
A repellent product scatters rather than clears - deeper into the wall void, through to the unit next door - and leaves residue where food is prepared.
What they leave behind matters: droppings, saliva and cast skins are known asthma and allergy triggers, so this is a health question as much as a comfort one.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
We identify the species, then go looking with a torch and mirror - hinges, inside appliances, behind the kickboards, into the wall voids. What we find decides the treatment, not a set routine.
Where grease or food build-up is feeding the colony, we show you what to clean first. Bait works far better when it is the most attractive food in the room.
Small dots of professional gel bait go into the cracks cockroaches travel through. They eat, return to harbourage and the effect passes through the population.
A growth regulator shuts down the next generation, and dust goes into the voids and cavities where gel simply cannot be placed.
With American and Australian cockroaches the work is outside the kitchen: the pits, the floor wastes, the subfloor and the roof void, because that is where they breed.
We leave you a written record of the job. If it is still heavy at two weeks, or comes back inside the 6 months a general treatment carries, we return at no charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Takes care of the one in front of you | Does nothing to egg cases or voids, and drives the rest deeper into the walls |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Covers a whole room's open surfaces at once | Harbourage is untouched, benches end up with residue, and the population spreads out |
| Retail bait stations | Reasonable for a minor, early problem | Too little bait to clear a colony, and easily out-competed by crumbs and grease |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Fed on inside the harbourage and shared through the colony, with the option to swap formulations | Only works with the food competition removed, and needs days to two weeks |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops the young ever reaching breeding age, which ends the egg-case cycle | Acts slowly by design, so bait always goes in with it |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
Expect more sightings, not fewer - slow-moving cockroaches out in the open or dead on the floor. That is the bait and growth regulator taking effect. Sweep them up.
Numbers should drop away through this period. Do not wipe the bait out of hinges and cracks, and do not spray over it - cockroaches will stop taking bait that has been sprayed.
Keep the agent or building manager informed if it does not settle; cockroaches travel between flats. Our apartment pest control page covers the options for a whole block.
If you still see steady activity after two weeks, or cockroaches return within 6 months of a general treatment, call 1300 313 373 for a warranty re-treatment.
A cockroach sighting in a Menai food business is a compliance problem before it is a pest problem. The program we run is built so the paperwork exists before anyone asks for it.
A good share of our Menai work sits close to Menai Conservation Park, though the back streets and the Bangor boundary are just as familiar.
In older Menai buildings a cockroach population can live entirely in the drain line and come up at night. Treating the kitchen and ignoring the pipework means you are treating the visitors, not the residents.
Treatment follows identification. Indoor German cockroaches need bait and a growth regulator; drain-dwelling species need the pits and subfloor treated.
Gel baits in cracks and hinges, not blanket spraying across benches where you prepare food.
One flat or a whole commercial kitchen - food premises are done outside trading hours.
A general treatment is covered for 6 months. Cockroaches inside that period mean a free return visit.
