Budding splits the colony
Species with many queens, such as Argentine ants and several house ants, respond to a repellent spray by relocating. A few hundred workers and a queen move to a new spot, and you now have two colonies instead of one.

Where Colebee sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Our Blacktown & Mount Druitt technicians cover Colebee and the rest of 2761 as a matter of course - it is only about 36.6 km north-west of the city. We cover Colebee on scheduled runs through the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, and we will give you a firm time rather than a window.
A lot of our Colebee jobs are in the streets around Schofields station and Frank Flores Park, and we are out near Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club regularly enough that the technician usually knows the access before they arrive.
Colebee is in the Blacktown City area, and we cover Dean Park, Hassall Grove and Schofields on the same runs - handy if you own more than one property or your ant problem has come from next door. Newer estate housing sits close together on small blocks, so what happens next door matters. We check the boundary and the fence line, not just the house.
What we see in Colebee is newer homes on small blocks where next door has the same problem. Describing it accurately when you book saves a second visit.
We also work the area near Greenway Village, and the rest of 2761 with it.
When you book, we confirm the 2761 run the day before and give you an arrival time rather than a window. If we are already out at Dean Park or Hassall Grove that morning, we will usually offer you the earlier slot.
If there are ants running up a shrub beside a Colebee house, look for scale or aphids on it. They are farming, and that food source is what sustains the colony.
Several of the species we treat around Colebee are polydomous - one colony spread across many nests. Treating the nest you found leaves the rest of it working, which is why we look for the extent before we choose a product.
A trail along a bench is foragers, and foragers are maybe five per cent of the colony. The queens, the brood and most of the workers are in a nest you have not found, which is why wiping the trail achieves nothing lasting in a Colebee kitchen.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Small brown ants that include a bigger-headed soldier caste. Sandy soil pushed up between pavers and along slab edges gives them away. Colonies run to many nests, and oil-based granular bait is what works.

A small, matt brown ant that moves quickly in heavy trails. Its nests have multiple queens and link up with others nearby, so the problem often spans several properties. Repellent spray is the worst thing to use on it.

Big ants, usually out after dark, nesting in soil, hollow trees and timber that has gone soft or damp. They are not the structural threat their overseas relatives are, but finding one in a wall usually means there is a leak behind it.

Taken on an Elite job: a mortar joint with a nest behind it. Weep holes and failed mortar are a direct path into the cavity, where many black house ant colonies establish.

An Elite photo of gel bait on an active trail. The whole point is letting them feed and take it home, so the trail must be left alone once we have treated it.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail in from the outside wall means the colony is in the cavity or the garden edge - the entry point is what we follow.
Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.
They go into switches and appliances for the warmth. Keep insecticide out of power points and tell us, so it can be treated safely.
Swarms of winged ants in spring and summer are mating flights. Seen indoors, they can mean a mature colony inside the building.
Ant trails at the shower, vanity or toilet usually come down to moisture - either damp in the wall or a slow leak they are drinking from.
These are the bull ants and jumper ants nesting in lawns and beds - a painful sting, and a risk of serious allergic reaction for some.

Supermarket sprays are repellent: ants detect them and walk around them. Professional non-repellent products are not detected, so foragers walk through, pick up the active and carry it back to nest mates.
Ants will ignore bait that does not suit their current needs. Because they alternate between sugar and protein depending on the brood, we test preference rather than assume.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We identify the ant and follow trails back to entry points and nests in walls, paving, garden edges and roof spaces.
Before committing, we offer a little of each bait type and let the colony tell us which one it is on.
Inside, gel bait follows the trails: window frames, skirting, the routes they already use, always placed where children and pets cannot get to it.
Outside, a non-repellent goes around the foundation, weep holes, door frames and paths, so ants coming in pick it up on the way.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
Written summary, instructions on what not to spray, and a 6-month warranty covering the general treatment.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Mostly sweet liquids and honeydew, with protein demand during brood rearing | Gel bait along the trail, plus non-repellent treatment to weep holes and door frames | Daily detergent wiping of trails - it moves the foraging rather than stopping it |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oils | Oil-based granular bait on paving and lawn edges | Pouring boiling water or insecticide into one pile while dozens of nests remain |
| Argentine ant | Mainly sugars, protein at some points in the cycle | Slow-acting bait with a non-repellent treatment right across the boundary | Spraying a repellent barrier, which causes a multi-queen nest to bud |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, active after dark | Night trail inspection, baiting near the nest, and dealing with damp timber | Inspecting in daylight when the colony is not foraging |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects taken outdoors | Direct nest treatment wherever it is in the lawn or beds | Trying to dig it out yourself and getting stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies wake up and start raising new brood, so protein demand rises | First trails indoors, sand piles reappearing in paving |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Peak activity, with swarming flights triggered by warm humid conditions | Flying ants, and trails that thicken noticeably after storms and heat |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies are at full size and stock up before cooler weather | Trails into pantries and pet food |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outside activity drops away, though nests in warm wall cavities carry on | Ants near heaters, hot water units and in the kitchen |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
Our Colebee runs take in Greenway Village and continue across to the Dean Park boundary - all the same service area.
The Blacktown & Mount Druitt pattern is a surge after the first warm fortnight, then steady pressure into March. A colony treated in September is a fraction of the job it is in January.
A storm is the most reliable trigger for an indoor ant problem. Nests in soil and paving flood, and the colony relocates somewhere dry, meaning your building.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
Non-repellent products that foragers carry home, instead of sprays that scatter the colony.
General treatments come with 6 months. Ants back within that window means we come back too.

Get a Free QuoteAnt treatment starts from $89. The fixed price depends on the size of the property and how far the problem has spread, and we confirm it before we start - there is no call-out fee in Colebee 2761. Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty.
We cover it on scheduled runs, so a day's notice gets you the best slot. Colebee is about 36.6 km north-west of the CBD in the Blacktown & Mount Druitt, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
On a newer estate the boundaries are close and the landscaping is young, so ants move between properties along fence lines with very little to stop them.
Newer homes, tightly spaced, usually slab on ground - so the treatment concentrates on the perimeter and entry points.
Yes. We work in houses, units, strata blocks, rentals and commercial premises across Colebee 2761, and we provide the written report agents and strata managers ask for.

Every general treatment carries a 6-month warranty. Ring us if activity picks up again inside that period and we will arrange the return.
