Expect more sightings, not fewer - slow-moving cockroaches out in the open or dead on the floor. That is the bait and growth regulator taking effect. Sweep them up.

Where Cheltenham sits, who covers it and what it costs.
Cheltenham sits about 17.5 km north-west of the CBD in the Ryde & the Northern District, and postcode 2119 is one we are in most weeks. We run Cheltenham on a regular route, and same-day attendance is usually available.
If you are near Cheltenham station, Beecroft station or Booth Park, that is ground we cover constantly - it is the busiest part of Cheltenham for us.
Beecroft, Pennant Hills and Epping are all on the same route as Cheltenham. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
The bulk of our Cheltenham work is older semis with a paved rear courtyard and a sub-floor that no longer dries out. Mention the detail when you call 1300 313 373 - it decides how long we need on site.
Beyond that we are regularly around Epping Oval, and out as far as Pennant Hills Marketplace. If you are anywhere in 2119, you are inside the area we run.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2119 run the day before, and if Beecroft or Pennant Hills is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Heat is an accelerator. Through a Cheltenham summer the cycle from egg case to breeding adult runs weeks faster than it does in July, which is why a small problem noticed in spring is worth dealing with before Christmas.
There is a particular smell to a bad one - stale and slightly greasy, strongest when you open a cupboard that has been shut. If you can smell it in a Cheltenham kitchen, the population is well past a few.
One German cockroach egg case holds about forty young, and a female carries it until days before they hatch. That is why a kitchen in Cheltenham can look clear for a fortnight and then be worse than when you started. Kill the adults you can see and you have removed maybe a tenth of what is living behind the kickboards.
Knowing the species tells us where the nest is and which treatment will work. Two of these photos are from our own Sydney jobs.

The small indoor one - about 12 to 15 mm, light brown, with a pair of dark bands just behind the head. It stays close to warmth and water, which is why kitchens and bathrooms are where it establishes.

Up to roughly 4 cm long and reddish-brown. You find it in sewers, pits, grease traps and under the floor, and it travels up through drains after dark rather than nesting indoors.

Close to the American cockroach in size, with yellow edging near the head and down the wings. It belongs outdoors in gardens, mulch and subfloor areas, and enters the house rather than breeding in it.

Small and marked with pale bands. It is the one that does not want water, so it settles high and dry - behind pictures, inside electrical housings, in the top cupboards.

Where and when you see them is often a better clue than size. Use this to tell us what you are seeing when you call.
| What you see | Likely species | Where the nest usually is | What treatment focuses on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches you can see without a torch, plus droppings like coarse pepper on cupboard edges | German cockroach - daytime sightings mean a lot of them | Hinges, the cavity behind the fridge, under the kickboards, in the housings of the appliances | Gel bait rotated through the job, a growth regulator, and crack-and-crevice work indoors |
| A single big one after dark by the laundry tub, the bathroom or a floor drain | American cockroach | Stormwater and sewer pits, the space under the floor, floor wastes that have dried out | Treating the pits and drains, the subfloor, and sealing the gaps where pipes pass through |
| Yellow-edged cockroaches in the garage, or coming through a door from the garden | Australian cockroach | Mulch and leaf litter, woodpiles, and the roof void | External perimeter, a dusting through the roof void, and clearing garden harbourage |
| Little banded cockroaches behind a picture frame or inside the TV unit, away from any water | Brown-banded cockroach | Dry warm spots in furniture and inside electrical gear | Targeted baiting in the rooms you live and sleep in, not the kitchen |
| Cockroaches in a unit that keep returning weeks after your own treatment | German cockroach moving between units | Shared service risers, bin rooms and wall cavities | A coordinated building treatment. See strata pest control |

Each German cockroach egg case carries roughly 30 eggs and stays with the female almost until they hatch. Surface sprays never reach it, so the following generation arrives regardless.
Several egg cases per female, and nymphs maturing in weeks where it is warm - the arithmetic is why cockroach numbers climb so steeply once they are established.
Because they repel, bombs and aerosols spread the problem: deeper into the walls, into the neighbouring unit, and over the surfaces you prepare food on.
What they leave behind matters: droppings, saliva and cast skins are known asthma and allergy triggers, so this is a health question as much as a comfort one.
What the technician does on the day, in the order it happens.
Step one is knowing which cockroach you have. Step two is finding where it shelters: torch and inspection mirror through hinges, appliance cavities, kickboards and wall voids.
Where grease or food build-up is feeding the colony, we show you what to clean first. Bait works far better when it is the most attractive food in the room.
Rather than spray, we put small amounts of gel exactly where they travel. They eat and return to shelter, and that is how the treatment reaches the ones you never see.
A growth regulator prevents the young reaching breeding age, while dust treats the wall voids and cavities that gel placement cannot get into.
American and Australian cockroaches are treated at source: pits, floor wastes, subfloor and roof void. Treating the kitchen alone just handles the ones that already made it in.
You get a written summary. If activity is still heavy after two weeks or returns within 6 months of a general treatment, we come back at no charge.
Some DIY options help with a few stray cockroaches. An established German cockroach colony is a different job.
| Method | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosol surface spray | Works on a cockroach you can actually see | Egg cases and harbourage are untouched, and it repels the others further in |
| Bug bombs and foggers | Treats the exposed surfaces of a room in one go | Nothing reaches the hiding places, residue settles on food surfaces, and the colony scatters |
| Retail bait stations | Can help if you have only seen a few | The bait volume is small, and competing food such as grease wins out |
| Professional gel bait rotation | Fed on inside the harbourage and shared through the colony, with the option to swap formulations | Only works with the food competition removed, and needs days to two weeks |
| Insect growth regulator | Stops the next generation maturing, breaking the cycle of egg cases | Deliberately slow, so bait does the knockdown alongside it |
Ten minutes of preparation lets the bait reach more cockroaches.
Expect more sightings, not fewer - slow-moving cockroaches out in the open or dead on the floor. That is the bait and growth regulator taking effect. Sweep them up.
You should see a steady decline. Leave the gel where we put it in hinges and cracks, and keep your own insecticide away from it, or they will refuse to feed.
If it keeps going, let the agent or building manager know - cockroaches move between units readily. There is more on co-ordinated work on our apartment pest control page.
Two weeks on and still seeing them regularly, or back inside 6 months of a general treatment? That is a warranty call - 1300 313 373.
We are around Pennant Hills Marketplace and the streets behind it most weeks, and we cover every address in 2119, not just the main roads.
Council officers want records, not reassurance. For food premises around Cheltenham we provide the treatment schedule, the products used, the monitoring point locations and the findings from each visit, in a form you can hand over.
Humidity is the driver. In the Ryde & the Northern District the summer months bring the fastest breeding, and the mild winters mean a population indoors never really slows - it just gets quieter.
Treatment follows identification. Indoor German cockroaches need bait and a growth regulator; drain-dwelling species need the pits and subfloor treated.
Gel baits in cracks and hinges, not blanket spraying across benches where you prepare food.
One flat or a whole commercial kitchen - food premises are done outside trading hours.
A general treatment is covered for 6 months. Cockroaches inside that period mean a free return visit.

Same-day attendance is usually available. Cheltenham is about 17.5 km north-west of the CBD in the Ryde & the Northern District, and we give you a firm arrival time rather than an all-day window.
Joined housing is the reason. Where walls, roof voids and sub-floors are continuous between properties, cockroaches are a street-level problem rather than a house-level one.
Older joined housing. The treatment takes account of shared walls, continuous sub-floors and roof voids that run between properties.
We do all of those. A good share of the Cheltenham jobs we run are tenanted or strata properties, so the written record comes as standard.
