Budding splits the colony
Multi-queen species - Argentine ants and several house ants among them - react to a repellent by splitting. A queen and a few hundred workers relocate, and one colony becomes two.

Where Rosebery sits, who covers it and what it costs.
If you are in Rosebery or anywhere else in 2018, you are in our Inner South & City Fringe patch, 6 km south of the CBD. Our technicians are through Rosebery most days, so same-day attendance is usually available.
Our Rosebery work takes in the streets by Mascot station and Tarakan Reserve, through to Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre at the other end.
City of Sydney and Bayside is the council area for Rosebery, and we treat Eastlakes, Mascot and Beaconsfield on the same schedule. Terraces, semis and converted blocks share cavities and risers, which is why a single-unit treatment often does not hold on its own.
Rosebery jobs tend to be terraces and semis where the problem has come through a shared wall. Let us know which when you ring and we will plan the visit around it.
Beyond that we cover the rest of 2018, including the streets around The Lakes Golf Course.
You get a confirmed time, not a window. We plan the 2018 run the day before, and if Eastlakes or Mascot is on the same round there is often an earlier slot going.
Some ants want protein, some want sugar, and the wrong bait gets ignored completely. Identifying what is trailing through a Rosebery kitchen is the difference between a result and a wasted visit.
The reason the trail returns to the same spot in a Rosebery kitchen is that it is marked chemically. Wiping it buys hours. Treating the colony that maintains it is the only thing that ends it.
Ants will defend aphids and scale from predators because that honeydew is their sugar supply. Deal with the scale on the plants near the house and the ant pressure drops with it.
Each of these behaves differently, so the bait and the placement change too. Two photos come from our own jobs.

A small black ant with a glossy body, and the one most often in Sydney kitchens. It nests in wall cavities, the roof void and garden edges, trails along skirtings and cabling, and feeds readily on sweet bait.

Tiny and brown, with a distinct large-headed soldier. The sign is loose sand appearing between pavers, along the slab edge and in grout lines. Many nests to a colony, which is why we use oil-based granular baits.

Small and flat brown in colour, running in dense fast trails. Because nests hold many queens and join with those next door, the infestation is usually bigger than one property. Never spray a repellent on it.

Large ants that come out at night and nest in soil, hollow trees or damp timber. Unlike the overseas carpenter ants they seldom threaten structure - but a nest in a wall tells you there is moisture there.

Photo from an Elite job: an ant nest emerging from a mortar joint. Weep holes and cracked mortar lead straight into the wall cavity, which is where many black house ant colonies live.

An Elite job photo: gel placed directly on an active trail. Leave it be - the ants feeding there are the ones delivering it to the colony.
Where ants appear usually tells us where the nest is and which species we are dealing with.
A trail coming in from the external wall normally means a nest in the cavity or at the garden edge, and that entry point is where the tracing begins.
Loose fine soil along paving, driveway joints and the slab edge means coastal brown ants have nested underneath.
Electrical fittings and switches stay warm, which is why ants nest in them. Do not spray into them; let us know and we will handle it properly.
Mating flights produce the winged swarms you see in spring and summer. Finding them indoors suggests a mature colony inside rather than outside.
When trails appear around the shower, vanity or toilet, moisture is the reason - often a slow leak the colony is drinking from.
Bull and jumper ants live in lawn and garden-bed nests. The sting hurts, and for some people it brings on a serious allergic reaction.

Ants can detect a supermarket spray and will simply route around it. A professional non-repellent is undetectable, so they walk through it and carry the active home to the colony.
Bait is only taken if it matches what the colony wants right now. Their preference moves between sugar and protein as the brood changes, so we test and switch baits accordingly.
Results come over days as the bait spreads. Spray the trail the next morning and you have killed the ants that were carrying it home. Our blog explains budding in more detail.
Tracing first, then baits and non-repellent products that do the work after we leave.
We work out which ant it is and follow the trails back, which is what locates nests in wall cavities, under paving, along garden edges and in roof spaces.
We put out small quantities of sweet, protein and oil-based bait to see which the colony is actually taking today.
We run gel along the active trails, window frames and skirting, keeping every placement out of reach of children and animals.
We treat the foundation line, weep holes, door frames and paths with a non-repellent so incoming ants carry it with them.
For nests beneath pavers and in lawn edges - typically coastal brown ants - we use granular bait or treat the nest directly.
The job ends with a written summary, advice on what to avoid spraying, and a 6-month warranty.
The same bait does not suit every ant. This is how we choose.
| Species | Usually feeding on | Treatment approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black house ant | Sugars and honeydew, turning to protein while brood is being raised | Sweet gel on the trails themselves, with a non-repellent at weep holes and frames | Cleaning the trail off every day, which just sends them foraging somewhere else |
| Coastal brown ant | Protein and oily foods | Oil-based granular bait over paving and lawn margins | Attacking a single visible nest while the rest of the colony's nests carry on |
| Argentine ant | Sugars, with protein at times | Slow-acting baits plus non-repellent treatment across the property line | Repellent barrier sprays, which split multi-queen nests |
| Sugar ants (Camponotus) | Sweet foods and insects, foraging after dark | Inspecting trails at night, baiting close to the nest, and fixing damp timber | Working only in daylight hours, when these ants are not out |
| Bull ants and jumper ants | Nectar and insects, outdoors | Treating the nest directly where it sits in lawn or garden bed | Digging the nest out by hand, which is how people get stung |
| Time of year | What is happening | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring (Sept to Oct) | Colonies come out of winter and begin raising brood, which pushes protein demand up | The first indoor trails of the season, and sand reappearing between pavers |
| Late spring to summer (Nov to Feb) | Foraging peaks, and warm humid spells trigger mating flights | Swarms of winged ants, and heavy trails following storms or heatwaves |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | Colonies reach full size and start stocking up ahead of the cold | Trails heading for the pantry and the pet food bowl |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | Outdoor foraging slows right down while nests in heated walls continue | Ants showing up by heaters, hot water services and in kitchens |
Most failed ant treatments come down to what happens in the week after.
If your Rosebery paving keeps developing little sand volcanoes, sweeping them away is treating the spoil rather than the nest. The colony is in the bedding sand under the slab.
We are around The Lakes Golf Course most weeks and cover every street in 2018, including the ones off the main roads.
Ants protecting aphids on a Rosebery citrus or gardenia will keep that trail running all season. It is a garden problem presenting as a kitchen one.
Trails are traced to the colony, not just sprayed where you saw them.
Sweet, protein or oil-based, picked to suit the ant and the point in the season.
We use non-repellents the foragers carry back, not sprays that split the colony up.
Six months of warranty on a general ant treatment, and a return visit if they come back inside it.

Older inner suburbs combine shared structure with ageing drainage, and ants exploit both. Rear courtyards that have been paved over make it worse by trapping damp against the walls.
Mostly terrace and semi. We look at the party wall, the sub-floor and the roof space, because those are the routes between houses.
We do. A lot of our Rosebery work is rentals and strata, so the report, the products used and the areas treated are all recorded in writing for whoever needs them.

Normally you can stay. Some treatments mean keeping out of a particular room briefly, and we will flag that when we arrive so you can plan around it.
An hour to two hours covers most jobs. The size of the building and the extent of the problem are what change it.
